Crime and violence affect every community in one way or another. The National Night Out campaign is designed to create an awareness of the importance of working together with law enforcement to fight a quiet war against crime.

Everyday the news is filled with one crime after another…with each report there are victims of those crimes. National Night Out is a campaign that declares a quiet and steady war against crime in communities all over the nation in the United States. Everyone knows someone who has been a victim of some kind of crime. It is always un-acceptable to have innocent people affected physically, emotionally or financially in a negative way, simply because another human being chooses to commit a crime.

The National Night Out campaign strives to bring a focus on the awareness of drug & crime prevention efforts, to strengthen the collective power of neighborhood watches and the role of police and community programs to build up anti-crime programs to protect local communities. It is high time that the criminal element recognize the fact that law abiding citizens are sick and tired of being held hostage to those who have little regard for the safety and well-being of others.

Tonight is the night that many communities will hold events to support efforts to be aware of neighborhood crimes, to report suspicious activities and to recognize the fact that individuals have the power to change negative behaviors that affect whole communities by being mor pro-active in their own local areas by helping to fight back through a partnership with law enforcement to take back the streets to make them safer for friends, neighbors and families. If you would like to find out more about National Night Out activities…check out their site here: http://www.nationalnightout.org/nno/

Jack Kevorkian's life and career was a study in death and dying. Today he has passed away after a hospital stay...and his life and death are still provoking legal and moral questions.

It is interesting to contemplate some of the facets of a man who was such a controversial figure in American culture. Jack Kevorkian was known at one time in the media as Dr. Death because of his involvement in assisting individuals with taking their lives…this was titled assisted suicide. Today, Jack Kevorkian died after a two week hospitalization for pneumonia. He is believed to have died from a blood clot but they will know more later. He struggled with the pneumonia and kidney complications during the hospitalization from media reports.

A lot has been said about Jack Kevorkian in the media over the years. For many years he used the media to get his message across to people around the world; he felt that people should be allowed to take their own lives. He allegedly thought physicians should be allowed to assist them by providing the means (medicine) to accomplish that goal. Many individuals (allegedly over 100 people) with chronic illness or disease, who were suffering, sought him out to help them end their lives. He was eventually convicted of murder by prosecutors and served approximately 8 years in prison; but, he was released early because of his own medical conditions.

His battle with public perceptions and the public’s moral and legal viewpoint, on his stance towards assisted suicide, opened up many conversations around the world. If nothing else, I do believe that the media attention helped people to examine their own beliefs about the idea of assisted suicide and the concept of whether people should have end of life choices when faced with chronic illnesses or diseases.

My own personal feelings aside, I can’t help but wonder as Jack was stripped of his medical license after being in prison for assisting suicides in the past; if he could have, would he have taken his own life at the end?

I mean, Jack’s life and career appeared to revolve around death and dying. He didn’t have access to his machine, that he invented to assist those who wanted to commit suicide, while he struggle with his illness in the hospital. Still, he has had health problems for years…which was part of the reason he was released early from prison.

One wonders, why didn’t he commit suicide himself during that time. Could it be that he realized the value in living even while chronically ill? Did he ever regret helping others to commit suicide? Publicly he remained defiant…but, when released from prison he agreed to no longer assist people with their suicides. Still, if he would have taken his own life…there is nothing that the legal system could have done to him after his death. He chose not to do that…and I am glad.

It is said that suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary situation. There are reports of people who have attempted suicide and somehow survived who report being glad that their attempt failed. Suicide leaves many victims…the survivors or loved ones of people who are successful at taking their own lives struggle with many issues.

Suicide prevention is important because people are in distress when they consider taking such an extreme action. Those stresses are intense…but often they are fleeting situations and if a person has an intervention that helps preserve their life than can go on and live a rewarding life (even if it is hindered by disease or illness). For those of us who have moral convictions about the idea of suicide, it is with sadness to hear of someone losing their life to suicide whether it is assisted or not. The subject is emotionally charged for most people…those who believe in the right to take their own life and those who believe it is wrong to do so.

Having lost a loved one myself, this week, after a long battle against a chronic disease; I can only imagine how much more complex the loss would have been, had that person chosen to take his own life. He suffered greatly, and yet he struggled to live; was he ever tempted to take his own life? I am sure there were moments when the pain became too much to bear…and yet, he fought for every moment he was allowed to have with his friends and family.

What are your thoughts on death and dying…Jack Kevorkian or assisted suicides? Our condolences to his friends and family at their loss.

Individuals do all kinds of work for the love of God. What type of ministry or missions do you do in your efforts of bringing God to those who are hurting or suffering in the world?

People do many things, for the love of God. There are those who feel that they have a specific calling in their lives to live and accomplish a great mission, or purpose. I’d like to underscore that by saying that we each have been born to praise God; and, to do the great commission which is; to bring the “good news” of Jesus, God’s son, to those who do not know him so that they may have an opportunity to accept him as Lord and Savior of their lives. By doing so, and repenting of their sins…committing their days and nights to living according to the word of God and it’s instructions; they will be used by God to accomplish many things in their lifetime.

I believe that just being aware of the world around you and noticing where the acceptance of God is lacking and doing your best to be of service in some way; of bringing a light or help to those who are in need, is a ministry itself. Some have a pull on their hearts to teach, preach, do missions work, or evangelize. There are others who are drawn to a particular effort of outreach which may be to take Bibles into areas of the world which have little or no access to the word. Then again, there are those with an online ministry to edify or build up disciples such as the Live Sticky movement which encourages people to spend a portion of their online time being dedicated to bringing awareness of God to those that they impact. These are all ministries that are needed.

A ministry might mean that you take meals to someone who is home-bound, lonely or spending time with someone who is depressed. It might mean providing comfort and help to those in poverty, a hospital/jail setting; or it could be a position of raising funds for someone to go out and do missions work. Some of those ministries can be dangerous; but still, God puts a calling on those individuals hearts.

Today in the news there is some sadness which highlights that statement. In recent days, there have been four Americans held hostage, on a yacht, which were hi-jacked by Somali pirates allegedly. It basically is a form of human trafficking…to hold humans against their will in the hopes of making money off of them. There was a military warship that was tailing them and as the shots rang out, the Navy warship took action capturing and killing the pirates.

Today, unfortunately the news says that all four American hostages were murdered by the pirates. The yacht was owned by Jean and Scott Adam and they had two passengers on board, Phyllis Macay and Bob Riggle. Jean and Scott often traveled distributing Bibles around the world on their yacht.

They knew the risks of traveling this part of the world where pirates have been wreaking havoc on ships traveling through the area. Still, they were committed to doing what they loved to do and felt called to do. This required tremendous courage on their part. They believed in more than just life here on Earth and it is a terrible loss to those who knew them and loved them. May God comfort their friends and families during this time of grieving. They sacrificed their lives to do what they felt called to do; many people do not understand that kind of commitment. It is a love that goes beyond the general human attitude of thinking only about oneself.

Did they want to die…no, I am sure they did not set out with the purpose of loosing their lives. There are many examples of people who have lost their lives for Christ. I believe that God has welcomed them home. They faced this danger knowingly…but it is still a tragedy in human terms. Spiritually, God will deal with those who took their lives.

There are many parts of the world which are hurting and struggling with war, with natural disasters, with political unrest and with spiritual warfare. Those areas of the world have people in need; just as there are people suffering and hurting in your own local neighborhoods and countries. Whether you feel the call to do missions work, teach/preach or evangelize in person or online…know that lives are being affected and changed for the good.

This is important work that you do, wherever God places you to do it. It is important to pray for those who set about doing the work of God…no matter where they do it. There are forces at work intending to persuade Christians to stand back and let the world take care of itself. That is not what God asks of us; be about the business of God. Be an encourager, support ministry in any way that you can. If it is working with children, in administration, or in actively pursuing those who don’t know Jesus…find a way to be in service.

I have friends and family who are doing amazing things because of their love of God. There is Friends Like Us who work with children with cancer and their families. They provide chemo bears to the pediatric patients that they work with…as well as providing gifts for the patients siblings. They talk with and support parents of those patients. They often send blankets from another organization called Layers of Love and a book on living with cancer from an author that they work with. Please visit them and support the work that they do. These are all ministries at work, in my humble opinion, because they show love and help people who are hurting and in need of some sort. This is just a small sample of people in my circle of influence.

My daughter recently went to Haiti and worked in an orphanage where the love of God is at work trying to improve the lives of those they touch. I intend to do a series of blog posts soon about some of the work being done there. Here is a link to the Haiti Foundation Against Poverty through which she felt called to work on a recent missions trip. http://haitipoverty.org/Updates.aspx

I just want to recognize those who are about the business of doing the work of the Lord. Thank you for the sacrifices of your time, your money, and your efforts. Never forget that the time is short and that God is coming soon. He alone knows the day and the hour…so when you get weary or feel burdened; remember that the life that you connect to God will have the opportunity to go to Heaven rather than the destination of Hell, a place of eternal suffering. This reason alone is why God gave us his word in John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whosever believeth in him shall not perish, but have everlasting life”.

What type of work do you do for the kingdom of God? What do you feel called to do or share? Are you actively involved in some kind of outreach ministry? Have you ever felt in danger while doing your ministry work? Will you tell us about it here? What do you do for the love of God?

Bath salts are being used and abused for a drug induced "high". This is not illegal but it is a very dangerous trend that many parents, police & medical personnel are just becoming aware of.

It is sad but true, bath salts have a genuine use for the body interested in health and wellness; but, bath salts are now being misused as a drug to achieve some sort of a high. Bath salts are generally used as a body soak and exfoliant. When used in this way, true bath salts (typically epsom salts mixed with fragrance beads and water softening agents) are a balm to achy muscles and dry skin. These are not dangerous!

However, there are products being labeled as “bath salts” that are powders packed in small tea bag sized envelopes and advertised as legal substitutions; merely to make money. They are being sold on the shelves of convience stores, truck stops and head shops all around the country; as well as online. They are marketed as bath salts, when those who produce these products know full well that they are not being used for that purpose.

Those who produce, market or sell these items should be held accountable for those who have had their lives destroyed by their products. Their intended use is for individuals who are looking for a drug induced high. Business selling them should be forced to removed them from their stores in my opinion. In fact, some states & communities are banning their sales…but, we need to increase awareness of this issue; before the use of these products becomes more widespread.

The powders are snorted, smoked or injected. This product is equal in intensity to meth in it’s effects on the human body and mind. It can be addictive even when the user experiences terrible effects during usage. Some people have committed murder, attempted suicide or just gone on a violent, destructive bender while using these products. Emergency rooms, police and poison control centers are seeing an increase in calls in areas where these products are being sold.

Children and adults can purchase a package of “bath salts” for approximately $20 or so. Unfortunately these things can be purchased online too. A parent seeing one of these packages may not realize that it is a drug with very harmful effects. These products have names like Cosmic blast, Vanilla Sky, Red Dove, White Lightning, Hurricane Charlie, and Bliss or Ivory Wave…they sound like a generic aromatherapy type of product; these packages are anything but. It is un-believable that this product is allowed to be sold; knowing that lives are being ruined. These legal substitutes are chemical stimulants designed to achieve a physical/psychological high and are extremely deadly. They have strong stimulants inside the packages which closely copy the effects on the body like speed or ephedra.

The problem is that these legal substitutes are not something that the DEA regulates. However, the damage these drugs do is causes dangerous reactions that often produce paranoia, violence and psychological terror that can not only endanger the user (who willingly takes that chance); but also affects anyone who is unfortunate enough to run into someone under the influence of such an un-predictable drug.

Some people abusing these bath salts, have described seeing visions of, aliens, devils or demons and attacking themselves or others because of those visions. If you see this stuff being sold…report it to the authorities. If you know someone using these products get them help immediately; report it to a poison control center and get them in to see medical personnel right away before they harm themselves or someone else. Schools should be prepared for the influence of these products as well by having drug counselors on speed dial. Educating individuals who are susceptible to the influence of using drugs to escape reality is going to be very important as this trend becomes more commonly known. Becoming aware of this trend of abusing bath salts could help you spot the danger and help to save lives.

The Mega Million Lottery Jackpot Fever reaches a high pitch. Tempting though it is, I am not buying a ticket...I could win or something traumatic like that!

Surely you’ve heard about the Mega Millions Lottery Jackpot in the news. Everyone in the media is going gaga over the $330 million jackpot winnings. People are dreaming big. Oh there is speculation on the lips of those that are interviewed about what they WILL do with their winnings (they haven’t even bought a ticket yet) and they are fantasizing about how THEIR money will be spent and how they will choose to collect it; either in a lump sum or, through long term annuity payments.

Players are standing in long lines to purchase their tickets. Even the “odds of winning” aren’t a deterrent to the most loyal of players…the 1 in 176 millionth of a chance of winning. Really? I wonder how someone convinces themselves that THEY are the one who WILL win the jackpot with those kind of odds. It really is gambling to spend money in the HOPES of taking the jackpot.

Although, there are those who spend serious money to try to even up the odds of winning to their benefit; by purchasing more than one ticket. Still, when you stop and think about it…doesn’t it really mean when they lose that they will just take a harder hit than the person to spends the bare minimum to purchase one chance to win?

I don’t play the lottery. First of all, people with my kind of luck just don’t win these things. Second of all, you hear about some of the winners of these huge lotteries who turn around and say, within a short period of time, I wish that I would have just torn up that ticket at the very beginning. That is not a high recommendation for praying for “good luck” when playing the lottery.

Those people have either lost their winnings, had the funds mis-managed, or been hit up with one kind of disaster after another, once they did win. Not to mention, because of winning the lottery; they were subjected to people coming out of the woodwork trying to get a portion of the money; thereby jeopardizing their relationships with many of the people in their lives and their communities. One of the winners I remember reading about lost a granddaughter to death, was sued by multiple people; and, seemed to have gained more problems than anyone would ever think possible. Often criminal, emotional, marital, or legal problems persist for winners of lotteries. Others become addicted to gambling or other high risk behaviors. For those who believe that winning will solve all of their problems in life; disappointment and disillusionment become a way of life.

Those issues are not an endorsement for wanting to win, right?

Winners are often told that 25% of the winnings go to the federal government. Forty one states are in on this particular jackpot…and of course, the states will have their own taxes that must be deducted from the winner’s take. It is highly recommended for people who are not already well blessed with finances and well versed in the world of high finance to seek out and (pay for) financial counselors, lawyers, accountants and investment bankers to advise them. (There would go another substantial amount of the winnings). I’ve always been taught that gambling is wrong…sinful, leads to all kinds of trouble.

It would be just my bad luck; if I violated what I’ve always been taught…I would WIN and suffer unbearably!

Those are all reasons why I am not buying a ticket. Even though it is tempting to think that all of a person’s financial problems could be wiped away in one moment…I won’t buy a ticket. I mean, geez; if you won that kind of money, you would always be worrying about losing it somehow. If you’ve never had it, you don’t have to worry about losing it, right? > So, it’s official; I’ve decided that no way am I going to risk winning the Mega Millions Lottery Jackpot this evening. LoL How about you, are you going to risk it?

Until recent years, Mel Gibson has enjoyed a favorable legacy; as recent developments are revealed we are left with conflicting impressions of who Mel Gibson is in public and in private.

It’s been a terrible thing to read of the recent reports about Mel Gibson and his alleged audio recordings of some hate filled diatribe towards his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva . He spews forth such rancor and biting words that it nearly reduces a person without prejudices or intolerances, of either differing ethnic races or opposite genders, into a soul cringing, physically flinching posture of self protection. This is the position that many who have suffered at the hands of abuse or domestic violence find themselves in automatically when conflict occurs.

Allegedly there are even more sound bites from these audio recordings that have equally disturbing comments from Mel Gibson. In the past, he has been accused by some as having made disturbing comments about Jews when he was arrested. It was said in reference to those statements, that he was under the influence. Others would argue that what is in the heart bubbles to the surface when that person’s inhibitions are loosened up from drugs/alcohol.

This past year has seen Mr. Gibson separate from his wife of 30 years, Robyn only to publically engage in his relationship with Ms. Oksana Grigorieva. They had a female child, Lucia, together and it is alleged by Oksana that Mel Gibson physically assaulted her by hitting her in the face, while she was holding their daughter, causing physical harm to Oksana; as well as threatening to burn down her residence.

Mel is now being investigated for domestic violence by law enforcement. A tallent agency has stopped representing him in the last week as well after Mel supposedly made disparaging remarks about hispanics whom he allegedly called “wetbacks”. His personal reputation is going through some rapid changes. He has been a successful actor in the box office for years earning kudos from the entertainment world and from fans alike.

These audio tapes, if proven to be his voice, are not going to help Mel Gibson dispell the impression that he is guilty of domestic violence when the tone of voice, that is alleged to be him, states the Oksana looks like a whore, has fake breasts and that she dresses in a provocative way; the male voice goes on to say that if she is attacked and raped by a pack of (N-word insulting name for African Americans) then she DESERVES that.

No-one deserves to be raped EVER by ANYONE; and I think, if he did make those statesment that it will be hard to regain any semblance of respect from people who believe as I do that it is wrong to say such things as well as to believe it. Also, the voice on the tape seems to dismiss Oksana by saying things such as I do not trust you, I don’t love you and I don’t want you; these are meant to tear down and diminish the context of their relationship. It was a relationship that would not be condoned by the church because it was outside of a marriage situation; still, he chose to indulge in a relationship with her so to talk in such a way about her is insulting on many levels. Whoa, talk about offensive!

I mean, obviously she was a good enough woman to have sex with; as evidenced by the birth of their child. He was attracted to her enough for that. He stepped outside of his marriage to have the relationship with Oksana. Yet, in the same vein, she is a whore; beneath contempt evidenced by his alleged words. These are the mixed up thoughts of a man who has not come to the understanding of the wholeness of an intimate relationship. I mean, you can’t have sex with a person outside of marriage and condem them without also condeming yourself. If she is a whore…then what makes him any different than her? Is this self hate that he is directing at her because he can’t sort it out in his own head? You have to wonder if his relationship with Oksana is the only illicit relationship that he has indulged in; maybe guilt is eating him alive.

How do you go from being in a marriage of over 30 years; to starting a new relationship with a woman who is not your wife, while still married and with whom you create a child; and then espouse your intense dislike and disrespect for that same person in such a way as to try to demean them as a person and as a woman. Inflicting alleged verbal, emotional and physical abuse upon them for the very acts that you willingly engaged in; when you yourself are a willing participant in the relationship, is a difficult concept for people to understand. If one is at fault, then both is at fault in the eyes of God, unless it is a forced sexual contact.

Emotions are very convoluted…mixed up with lust, anger, resentment, sadness and loathing not to mention guilt and embarassment. The conscious is a complicated thing; when people go against their own moral or religious values to give in to sin or temptation…the spirit rebels. Words and actions start to conflict with one another and it causes breakdowns in interpersonal relationships. The conscious is inside each of us to keep us from wrongdoing…it is a tool. When we disregard the very core of our beings and choose to step outside of what we believe is right/wrong we end up punishing ourselves and others in ways that we don’t understand.

This is one loaded audio recording: if indeed Mr. Gibson said, let alone thought any of these things. Then, it is indicative of a man eaten alive by a corrosive hate for not only those who are different from him by race or by being born female, as well. Let’s remember, Oksana is the MOTHER of his child as much as Robyn is; although Robyn had every moral and legal right as his wife to have the fullness of marriage by having intimate relations with him and giving birth to his children. Eventually Mel and Oksana’s young daughter Lucia will grow up and read of his rantings and judgements. On the other side of things, Mel already has children, from his marriage, old enough to read and understand his words and deeds. These kinds of words and actions are destructive to family relationships. What must Robyn or his adult children think of his behavior…his thoughts, his words and his mindset? Mel is still their father but they too must be trying to sort out this confusing circumstances.

Mel appears to be a man of conflicting images. He is on one hand professionally praised by other actors and actresses and co-workers. But, don’t you have to wonder how they feel, hearing of his feelings about women, race relations and appearances? He was known for years as a family man to the public. He was known for his Catholic beliefs. He was a benefactor for children and agencies that helped them. Yet, in the last few years he has had issues that have festered to the surface in public and in private. Who is the real Mel Gibson?

It is just my observation but, Mel comes across to me as a man who is embroiled in inner conflicts that he does not know how to resolve. A husband, father, family man/a man who was allegedly involved in a romantic relationship outside of his marriage vows, a good Catholic/yet a man who openly hates Jews (Jesus was a Jew), An actor and director who works with women in the entertainment industry who often dress provocatively for movie roles and for publicity; and, people of all skin colors and various religious beliefs, both behind the scenes and in film roles on the screen.

People who are tormented with hatred of others, simply because of their own intolerence for people who are different from them, are the most miserable people. Their intense dislike of others is caustic and hard to rally support for except from like-minded people who are also filled with judgement and hatred. Usually there is also a large supply of self- hatred underneath it all which is masked by self-medicating behavior with drugs, alcohol, cutting or self maiming physical behavior, suicidal thoughts or actions, or promiscuity; all of which are self destructive.

What is needed is a healing of the physical, emotional and spiritual person. Someone who fills up on hate or self destructive behaviors is someone who is trying to fill up empty spots or voids in their lives. They don’t know how to heal and often will need professional help; such as legal intervention, sometimes medical help such as medication, psychological evaluations and treatment, and spiritual guidance which focuses on positive guidelines for building up an attitude of love, encouragement and peace. Someone who has been indoctrinated since childhood with hate may require long term intervention before they are able to accept not only themselves but others on an equal footing or at least in an unconfrontational way of life.

A person’s legacy is a very important thing. It doesn’t matter if you are a celebrity or not; we alone determine the kind of legacy that we leave this earth with; by our thoughts, our actions, and by the way we make others feel. We live such a short time on this earth so why spend it in turmoil, unhappiness, anger and violence. Life is so much more rewarding when people find ways to live in peace, harmony, and love. If you or someone you know is imploding from hatred in their heart and mind…please find help before you destroy yourself or others.

Freedom is valuable to human beings but it is often not discussed in our personal relationships in a way that helps define what our expectations and responsibilities are in those relationships.

Freedom has been on my mind lately, not only because of the holiday, the Fourth of July; but, also due to several news stories of late and as well as some relationships with people in my circle of influence. When you say the word freedom, people often have a gut reaction to it. That is because freedom is central to all that we, as Americans, hold near and dear.

After all, men and women have fought and died for the privelege that we all enjoy of living free from the will of others being forced upon us regardless of their own values and beliefs. We don’t thank our military men and women enough for that and we should.

Our own country’s Declaration of Independence was based on the idea and principals of freedom. Without that document as the basis of our country, we would still be forced to accept another country’s authority of what we could and could not do as individuals, in America. Human beings still value freedom today, as much as during the formation of the United States of America; we just don’t always talk about what that means in our everyday lives.

Relationships are often broken or strengthened on the basis of the people’s concept of the boundaries and limitations of freedom in their relationship. It does not matter whether that relationship is romantic in nature or whether the relationship is based on friendship, or is a family relationship such as parent to child or, even a working relationship with a co-worker or a boss.

Freedom and it’s limitations are important. If you think I am wrong consider this… if a couple has differing views on what kind of freedoms are going to be allowed in the relationships regarding physical relations, financial spending or saving, discipline issues with regard to raising children…or even freedom to pursue a chosen career…how does one compromise the limits of such freedoms without compromising or destroying one person or the other’s sense of what is acceptable? They must consider the other person’s feelings regarding freedom as being equally important as their own and be willing to find an acceptable solution to both parties. This is not easy…because everyone wants what they want and they want it their own way, if given a choice.

A child who wants freedom, to do what they want at age two, will try to determine the outcome of how much freedom he or she has by acting out behaviorally. It is the same with a teenager who is experiencing conflict between what they consider acceptable limits to their freedom as far as the use of the phone/computer/video games/ romantic relationships or even curfew. When they don’t feel “heard” or at least met half way by a parental authority figure…often teens will rebel; sometimes even risk leaving home and damaging their relationship with parents or their siblings, over their own idea of how much freedom they should be allowed.

Another population of people who understand the value of freedom is someone who is incarcerated or imprisoned. The basic freedom of coming or going from place to place is something that most people enjoy and take for granted. However, a person who is being punished criminally or in a war situation may experience a severe form of limitation of their freedoms. They are not allowed to come and go freely. They eats, sleep, work and interact only when they are allowed to do so. This is meant to be a deterrent to commiting crime against societies. It works for some, but truthfully, most people do not know how much they value these basic freedoms until it is taken away from them. It is frightening to lack control over every aspect of your daily life. Most people will be persuaded to live a life free of crime to avoid loosing their freedom.

In general, the trick to having freedom that works is balancing freedom with responsibility and having a mutual respect for those with which the conflict is occuring. Freedom to make one’s own choices is never free…it comes with a cost. People who offer freedom to another person (from those in whom they are in disagreement with) WILL have strings attached or ulterior motives; even if they aren’t evident at the beginning.

We each must earn our own way in the freedom department…but, ultimately, the rights we enjoy as individuals are fought and won in battle through our military men and women who’ve paid a high costs; our court systems and through legal challenges; and, in our own personal relationships through our communication with others of our needs and expectations; and our willingness to consider the rights and freedoms of those around us as being important as well.

The thing about freedom is also that the person who is expecting it, demanding it needs to consider whether the freedom that they are wanting and seeking is worth the cost. It must be weighed in each circumstance and if meeting in the middle or compromising can’t be done without one or both people feeling like they have given up too much…then relationships can be damaged. It doesn’t matter how those relationships come into being…everyone wants to be valued and considered worthy of having equal say in how they conduct their lives. It is human nature.

A Massachutes school creates a policy to hand out condoms to school kids; without parental consent. This alienates parental authority & creates conflict in value systems.

Provincetown school district in Massachutes is in the middle of a controversy regarding their new policy of providing condoms to school aged children to prevent disease and pregnancy without having to notify the parents or get their approval. This new policy is less than a month old and allows for kids, regardless of age, to receive condoms upon request if they speak to a school nurse/counselor and the school official believes that the student is sexually active, or is planning to become sexually active.

There is great debate about whether this policy should or should not be in place. The Provincetown school district superintendent, Beth Singer appears to be puzzled by the controversy; even though the policy has no age limitation. This goes above and beyond regular sex ed where parents can opt out of certain aspects of a sex ed program because of their beliefs or their own choice in how they want to explain the facts of life to their children; but, this policy removes that option by eliminating a parent’s consent or awareness.

The author of the policy believes that all students should be educated about the use of condoms regarding disease and pregnancy prevention along with other issues relating to sexual education. News reports say that she believes the controversy is surprising, but good as it gets people discussing the issue. She has said that the policy was not created with the intention of giving condoms to children in elementary school. It will probably now be geared for middle school and up, if I understand this correctly. However, I think that is wrong because even though it does happen, kids should NOT be having sex. If they are having sex then it is up to the parents and that child/teen to discuss how things should be handled; it should be a private family matter.

It seems that, the school committee that approved the policy will re-examine the way that the policy is written because opposition to the policy has arisen over the availability of condoms to grade school children without having to notify the parents, of said students. Golly, I wonder why the parents are so upset…I mean…it is not like the school is trying to take over the role of the parents or anything, right? >by the way, that is SARCASM if you are not getting that without hearing the “tone” of my voice.

My feeling is that anytime a school or agency tries to usurp the authority of a parent over their children… it is wrong. By creating a situation where kids can skip going to their parents for something as important as birth control or a device meant to protect them while having sexual relations with another person (whether it be another minor or not) is a serious problem.

First of all, minors having sex is not ok. It happens yes; yes it does. However, our society is sending kids mixed messages about whether that is appropriate. Everything they hear and see in the media is sexually charged. Yet, legally (and morally) sexually activity with another minor is wrong. It can get them brought up on charges. A minor having sexual relations with an adult is illegal, and damaging emotionally, physically and spiritually.

Any sexual activity can expose them to sexually transmitted diseases. It can damage them emotionally and socially at a time when they are just discovering who they are as an individual. It can put them in a situation where they have to choose how to handle the consequences of a pregnancy; ie: raising the child, adoption, abortion and the after-effects of any of those choices. A minor is not typically in a position to handle the life long implications of such choices; often their choices are made while in crisis. They often do not have the finances, the education, the housing or the emotional maturity to handle the consequences of sexual behavior. Sometimes decisions such as having an abortion, or making an adoption plan, can actually harm them permanently forcing them to seek professional help in the future.

No one knows your child like you the parent does. You understand their emotional make up. You know what they have gone through personally. You the parent know their friends and their boyfriends/girlfriends. It is you the parent who is/was their first teacher in life…they have learned a great deal from you from birth on. This area of teaching is the parent’s responsibility. It can be uncomfortable yes…but understand this…no agency or school is going to have your particular set of values on this subject. They might get taught the mechanics of how sex happens and how to prevent pregnancy…but, they won’t get the personal/moral/religious viewpoint that you the parent has from some other authority in the exact same way as you, yourself would have your kids understand it.

I understand that not all parents are created equally…some parents will shirk their responsibility or worse, they may care less what their kids are doing; let alone deal with any consequences. There are abusive family situations as well…that IS when an agency is appropriate to step in and take over the parenting duties…when an adult parent is unfit. In that situation, a school counselor, a trusted adult or even a member of clergy can be confided in to meet the needs of a kid who is in need of counseling regarding sexual behavior. But, it is not fair to the parents who do take their leadership position as heads of their households away by superceding their parental authority.

The fallout of damage to personal relationships due to the alienation of parental authority is real and can hurt your relationship with your child forever.

The mere fact of keeping the parents out of the decision making loop, in an area of life that has the potential of affecting their child for the rest of their life which allows them to keep those kind of secrets is unhealthy and just plain wrong.

I would hope that this policy helps people realize and respect how important these decisions are and allows them to be decided between parents, their children, and their own family’s medical/spiritual consultants.

Four adults allegedly cruelly forced a special needs minor to get a tattoo; & then pictures of the victim's abuse & humiliation were shown at school.

I am sick and tired of cruelty. I hear almost everyday instances of cruelty from one human being to another either on the news, on radio, or just in having conversations with others; and, it makes me ill. How can someone be deliberately mean to another person and live with it in their heart, mind or soul and not have it destroy them? Today, I heard another situation that just hurt my heart…it was about four adults who acted with cruelty towards another person who was vulnerable…an individual with special needs.

The incident involved the forced, and coerced, tattooing of a 14 year old special needs student. This student had been exposed to bullying at school; and, these so called adults (all over the age of 18) allegedly told him that the bullying would stop if he got a tattoo. He said he didn’t want one; but still, he was allegedly threatened and forced to get a tattoo which had some kind of image along with obscene words on his buttocks.

Tattoos take time to apply to a person; even when a person wants to have one. I can’t imagine what this young man endured during this “procedure”. He’s been taunted at school by other students who are picking on him because of his special needs and then he is assaulted in this way. Not only is he physically scared but he is also emotionally scared because these people chose to humiliate and abuse him.

This whole situation came to the attention of the authorities because pictures of this young 14 year old abuse victim were being circulated at school and a teacher reported it to the authorities when they became aware of the pictures. Thank you to the unknown teacher who had the courage to do the right thing! Teachers don’t often get enough credit these days for what they do at school for our kids. Often, teachers are on the first line of defense when it comes to protecting special needs students from abuse or bullying. Along the same lines, other students who are caring and filled with the strength of character to be an advocate for special needs students are becoming more rare these days. To those of you who do the right thing in these types of situations…I thank you as well.

I wonder, just how many people saw these photos and laughed? Were they amused at the image, the words, or just the fact that someone that they considered to be of a lessor value than they themselves, or one of their friends, was put in this position of having their picture plastered all over the school for others to look at and make fun of him?

Were they not moved by compassion to report such a terrible crime? How can a person take joy in the torture, humiliation, or abuse of another person; whether they know them or not? Is not a special needs person worthy of protection, compassion, or caring?

I mean, even if someone does not know a special needs person; don’t they understand that they have feelings and emotions just like they themselves? Everyone wants to feel safe, be loved, be accepted and have friends at school. It is unacceptable that this situation was turned into a source of entertainment by some students.

The victim here was only 14 years old. I think that those pictures should be considered sexual exploitation by anyone who had access to them or viewed them and did not report it. Any person who was passing along the photos to others should suffer consequences as well as the people who were involved in the actual abuse of this young man.

How can people who are supposedly blessed with average or above intellectual abilities treat another human being in this way? What gives them the right to consider themselves better than another person; simply because of a perceived imperfection called special needs? It is wrong, it is cruel, it is immoral, and it is…ILLEGAL.

Parents, teachers, neighbors, grandparents, church leaders we must all take our roles of leadership seriously and start instilling in our young people tolerance, compassion and empathy towards others; especially the most vulnerable individuals in our society such as young children, the elderly or those who are afflicted with disabilities. It is important that we do this because as a nation, we are losing our moral compass because people who can do these kind of horrible things to their fellow human beings and not see something wrong with it are becoming more common everyday.

Hello…no-one SHOULD have to tell another person that this kind of behavior is wrong. However, New Hampsire’s court system should make it clear; because these four individuals in New Hampshire have been arrested and charged for their actions. Let’s hope that the legal system really makes an impact on others who think they can be cruel, and treat other human beings any way they want to and get away with it; by making the legal punishment fit the crime. The punishment should be large enough to send a message to anyone else who may consider bullying or abusing a special needs individual, that it is NOT the right thing to do! What do you think would be an appropriate punishment for someone who abuses another person in this way?

Technology & social media are allowing large groups of youth to come together in public; forming mobs of people. Some times these are positive experiences and occasionally they promote negative or illegal behaviors.

Reading the news today on a popular news website informed me about a new trend taking place. Youths (preteens/teens/young adults) are using technology and social media sites to organize random flash mobs to come together to arrange opportunities for things that gain momentum and attention. Some of those flash mobs are doing good things such as community volunteerism or fun things such as pillow fights or attention seeking amusements such as large group frozen statues in a designated area of large cities.

That is fine and good…even an interesting social experiment if you ask me. However, recently some of these flash mobs have turned towards destructive behaviors such as blocking traffic, walking streets and smashing windows, climbing on vehicles and scaring tourists and community members.

Many of these flash mobs are being organized with text messages, online social media sites like Twitter and Facebook as well as others. Even in the best of circumstances, an event that is organized like this has the potential to go from good to bad at a moment’s notice.

However, my feeling is that depending on what the original intent of the coming together of large groups of young people; it is imperitive that they maintain a clear head and think for themselves. If the “invitation” to come together is for a theme or idea of something good and pure…then by all means, go with the best of intentions. Do good. Have fun. Enjoy! However, be responsible for yourself and your actions. If things start to go badly…use that technology or social media to notify authorities. Don’t join in illegal, immoral, or destructive behaviors.

If that “invitation” for a flash mob or group activity starts out with some destructive purpose…be responsible; don’t join in, and please, notify the authorities about what you have seen or heard. Don’t take the pathway of “It is not my responsibility to do anything about it”. If you “know” about it…you have a responsibility to report it, in my opinion. You could be instrumental in preventing a tragedy, or violence or some kind of related damage to an event that never had the potential of being a positive event in the first place.

Thinking for oneself is critical to keeping people on a positive moral track. It can help prevent a person from being caught up in that group mentality that can have long term legal, moral, physical, spiritual and emotional consequences.

Instilling a strong sense of values and personal responsibility in children is the best way to avoid raising up young adults who will diregard the safety and well-being of others or in other words desensitizing them to doing what is the right thing to do in any given circumstance.

Any time we try to persuade someone to go along with the crowd, without thinking that action through, weighing the pros and cons of taking such an action; it is wrong.

I happen to love social media, the immediacy of the technological world that we live in…but like anything in our environment it can be perverted or used for selfish intent. Teaching our young people to think for themselves, to consider any consequences of their actions before they choose to follow the crowd can make for stronger individuals and promote a life of keen decision making. Believe it or not, it can also be a shot in the arm at preventing crime or illegal activities that can negatively impact our families, our communities, businesses, and our schools.

Parents, friends, neighbors, clergy, teachers…authority figures of any description need to inspire our youth to live and breathe independent thinking; combined with responsibility and caring action. If you see someone who is being be-littled or bullied by others, or being controlled by stronger willed personalities in their lives…encourage them to stand true to themselves and the values that they believe it. Teach them it is ok to do the right thing- teach them to recognize what IS the right thing. In fact, live that life yourself and be an inspiration; simply by the way you live your own life.
