A love for crafts and sewing has turned a hobby into a service of creating hand sewn items for others.

Well, it seems as though a hobby, of mine and some friends, has turned into a labor of love. We started making some gifts and accessories at the sewing machine for an upcoming craft show and it has turned into something over and above; as people have been viewing our crafts and then…requesting things of their own. We’ve created mini-bow tuck handbags and purses, tote bags, reusable tote bags, messenger bags, baby bibs and burp rags, crayon and maker roll ups, zippered pouches for cosmetics or small toys…or even zippered bags for books or e-readers. If you are interested in purchasing such items…feel free to check us out at: Its Sew Made . You can find some of our items on Pinterest as well.

Children who are prescribed eyeglasses are often self conscious & refuse to wear them. Ficklets eyeglass charms help solve that problem by building a confident self esteem with fashion wear.

Fashion Eyeglasses Charms Even The Most Self Conscious

Let’s be honest, most children who are told that they must wear glasses will often not be thrilled with the idea of having to wear eyeglasses. For many children, it is the idea that others will make fun of them or, cause them to be viewed as being different from other children their own age. Being bullied because you are visually impaired and have to wear glasses can cause a child to refuse to wear them, out of fear of being made fun of.

No one want to be made to feel self conscious about themselves, especially at certain ages when it is most important to fit in with their peers. We’ve come along way since the days of having a choice between wearing heavy black plastic frames or wire frames that were basically your only choices.

Still, everyone likes to look their best and there are many fashion frames from which someone can choose to fit the shape of their face and their sense of style. On the other hand, if you are looking to change things up so that you don’t get bored with a certain look once you’ve purchased your eyeglass frames; there wasn’t much you could do except buy multiple sets of glasses…until now.

Ros Guerrero is the owner of a company that has solved this problem. She invented eyeglass charms that add a bit of decorator style to your eye wear frames. Some of these charms are classic styles that are a great way to dress up your lenses for a night out…others are kind of funky colorful and fun charms. There are charms for adults, for girls and for boys too. I like the fact that there are charms that a child can choose from in their area of interest of art or sports.

There are also seasonal charms, pets/animals, colorful flowers, or charms that create awareness of issues such as breast cancer. Ros has created a variety of charms for you to choose from. These make great gifts too for just about any occasion! They are easy to attach and the fun is in the conversations that take place when others notice the charms attached to the glasses. It is a wonderful way to break the ice for children who may have trouble initiating conversations with others.

The really neat thing about Ros’ company is that her daughter Gem was her inspiration. One day, Ros designed and attached her first set of charms to Gem’s glasses and sent her to school. Gem received so many compliments, in her special needs class, that the idea of Ficklets was born. Getting noticed wearing glasses, for a child, is not always a positive experience. Ficklets charms can positively influence how a child perceives wearing their eye wear. After all, if a child won’t wear their glasses how can they possibly help their eyesight? Much of a person’s education is learned visually. If a persons vision is impaired in any way, it is only logical that getting them to commit to wearing their glasses is important, right?

Ros & Gem ~*~The designer & The inspiration

As you know, children aren’t the only ones who wear glasses. What’s really great about eye wear today is the fact that there are so many choices. Still, it is the same for adults…who wants to wear the same old- same old look, day after day. There are classic charms for female adults as well. The added touch of these charms can dress up your look at work or, for a night out making you feel stylish and attractive. Everyone is at their best when they feel confident and assured about their appearance. Changing your look can be costly. It’s a lot more affordable to change up the look of your present glasses by purchasing Ficklets than it is to go out and purchase an extra set of frames.

Do you know someone who refuses to wear their glasses because they are self conscious about the way they look? Have you ever known someone whose life was changed because their vision was improved by wearing glasses? If so, then you understand the importance that Ficklets can play when it comes to self esteem and wearing prescription glasses. Are you thinking of someone in your life who would appreciate a pair of Ficklets? If so…what are you waiting for? Thanks Ros & Gem for helping us to see things more beautifully!

Check out this young girls reaction to her Ficklets: http://www.youtube.com/user/Ficklets?feature=mhum

Barbie & Ken have reunited after approximately a seven year break up. Is this drama good for our children or is it tongue in cheek marketing and as such, should be tolerated?

I don’t know about you…but, I grew up with Barbie and Ken. You know…of the plastic doll fame, Ken and Barbie? They were allegedly introduced to one another on the beach in Malibu back in 1961. They have been through it as a couple. For most of 43 years they were an item. Then, back in 2004 after all of those years together…another man caught Barbies eye. Talk about drama. Well, last night the drama of Barbie and Ken escalated as they have chosen to reunite in a very public way…through the world of media. Can we say ick?

Like those friends that you have in your Twitter or Facebook social media streams that post way too much private information online and embarrass you; Barbie and Ken have created a bit of a public scene. Ken took out ads on billboards trying to get Barbie back. After a bit of to and fro online it seems Barbie could not resist the call of the plastic perfect Ken. Uggg…do we need drama introduced to our children through their playthings? I mean really, isn’t the real drama enough, in most children’s circle of influence through their parents, schoolmates family lives and relationships in school enough? Do we really need to buy into some fabricated dysfunctional drama through our children’s dolls?

As much as I grew up with the make believe work of Barbie and all of her professional unrest…truly the woman just couldn’t decide what she wanted to be when she grew up! She is like 50 right? Now she is reuniting with her main man Ken after a seven year separation where they each went their own ways supposedly? What has Ken done as a partner in the relationship? He is not clearly defined. He does not have a clear role as a male role model. What does Ken “do” for a living? What does he have to offer a partner? What caused him to decide that he and Barbie could resume a healthy romantic relationship after their previous failure? Were they in counseling together? Did they seek to work through individual issues before considering trying to rebuild their relationship?

If I am going to buy into the publicity of this reunited relationship of Ken and Barbie and encourage children to get involved…as an adult who wants stability in my children and grandchildren’s lives; I would want to see a healthy relationship develop. Today’s families have way too much unhealthy emotional drama in their lives. I think, the publicity on this thing went in the wrong direction.

Then again, some people don’t often demand healthy relationships of the people in their lives either. Some allow dramas to play out on our social media streams without trying to encourage people to clean up their relationships and get real help for their troubles; instead of temporarily patching things up just to keep repeating unhealthy patterns of behavior.

I, for one, won’t be encouraging this public pandering of Barbie and Ken because I don’t happen to see any socially redeeming benefits. Have we heard about why Barbie and Ken took a vacation from their relationship only to be wooed back into a surface relationship without benefit of working through their issues? Are they getting help from a qualified counselor to build up their relationship and repair the troubles that broke them up in the first place? No…we only see that they have decided that they miss one another and still are attracted to one another. Not good enough.

Kids need healthy boundaries and good role models to encourage strong, healthy relationships in their own real life world. I understand this is about advertising & marketing…but, if they want the public to go with the flow then the powers that be that came up with this Barbie and Ken drama should have followed up with more than…it is Valentine’s day and I want you back because you are hot, and you sweet talked me into it, kind of script. Don’t we have a right to expect better from Mattel?

What do you think? Does Mattel have a responsibility to promote their products in a healthier way to children? Baby boomers are loyal…but, most of us have achieved some semblance of maturity in how we conduct ourselves. Don’t we have a right as consumers, who helped to build their brand, to expect a better standard of respect for our families than just a gimmicky way to promote sales of their iconic dolls to our children and grandchildren? Let me know what you think of this controversy!

When a person passes away…you wonder why kind of epithet (description) others would use to describe that person. A person’s reputation…legacy…is important. Most people want to be remembered as someone who other’s genuinely liked, respected and wanted to spend time with.

Most people don’t want to be remembered negatively. Today, i heard that Mr. (Richard) Blackwell has died. Do you know who he is? I bet when i jiggle your memory cells you will recognize his legacy…it was extremely negative.

Mr. Blackwell was famous for his very harsh, negative, and biting descriptions of what people in Hollywood and the world of celebrity wore out in public…their fashion sense. He often said that he wasn’t condeming the person…just their fashion choices.

He was known for his lists of the 10 worst dressed people of each year. I was sure that there was so much more to this man. So i did a little digging. His celebrity was that he was an author of two books, he was a child actor, he was a television/radio personality, journalist, an artist and a talented fashion designer. But what is he best known for? His negativity…that was his claim to fame. That is such a waste of spirit. Obviously, he was much more talented that the world knew…however, he put negativity into the world. Regrets are something that most of us try to avoid…i wonder if he had a few when his time came.

Mr. Blackwell died of an intestinal infection. He had been hospitalized for quite some time…and was in a coma, at one point, i believe. He was born Richard Sylvan Selzer. He lived in Brooklyn, NY in a poor lifestyle. He says in his autobiography that he was a thief and a prostitute. He had a difficult early life. That might explain why some of his negativity carried over into his professional life as an adult.

I think that no matter what…we have to be aware of how we present ourselves to the world. We all have difficulties…some worse than others. People can get caught up in trying to one -up-manship in the area of who has had it more difficult; but…at some point, you set aside childhood ills, and YOU take the reins of your destiny as an adult. At that point, you and you alone, are responsible for the direction that your life takes. I want to work hard to make sure that the legacy that i leave behind is more heavy on positivity than negativity.

What obstacles have you had to overcome to take your life in a positive direction?

Ok, here we go…a few months ago, i heard about a lawsuit on one of the ABC news programs between Mattel, the makers of the Barbie doll empire, and MGA Entertainment, Inc the makers of the Bratz doll line. The issue seemed to spring from Mattel’s allegation that the designer Carter Bryant was working for them when he came up with the concept for the Bratz doll line; and therefore, they felt that it infringed upon their copyright since he was under contract to them at the time of the design; the jury seemed to agree.

The jury awarded Mattel $100 million dollars in compensation today. Wowie…that would pay for a whole lot of Barbie cars, Barbie swimming pools and certainly alot of Barbie mansions. Now that $100 million, was nowhere near the amount that Mattel was seeking; it was more in the area of $1Billion dollars that they felt MGA should owe them with the success of the Bratz dolls, toys and other assorted items MGA endorsed with the Bratz line.

I don’t know if you have ever seen the Bratz dolls but their heads are large…and they wear exceedingly seductive outfits and they have long hair and heavy makeup on these dolls. They are very sensualized dolls that have been marketed to young girls and preteen girls as the heighth of fashion dolls. In comparison, Barbie has been a mainstay in the toy market for years..but, since the sales began on the Bratz line…Barbie sales have fallen. The competition seemed to pit the “good girl image” with the “bad girl image”…what image do you think young girls in a hurry to grow up wanted mom and dad to buy them? Their choices are influenced by the things they see in our culture as “grown up”. With growing concerns about body image and a healthy attitude towards their self concept…we need to understand the connection that takes place in a child’s world view and how that affects their emotional development!

Teaching young girls to value their bodies as something more than window dressing to get attention used to be the norm; that is no longer true. Experts have been dealing with an increased awareness that young women are not happy with their bodies and will go to extremes to try to achieve the “look” that is in vogue. We have young women (and young men) who are tortured with anorexia, who are struggling with obesity, who pay for plastic surgery to get their bodies to fit a certain mold, putting foreign substances such as botox into their bodies, breast augmentation, etc. Educating them to the truth that the images they see in magazines and on television are adjusted with the magic of photo retouching and airbrushing techniques…that no-one has a perfect face or figure. It is time to stop and teach young people the importance of self acceptance. Stop allowing them to think that they don’t measure up to someone else’s standards of what is the ideal.

We really need to examine the culture that we expose our children to from magazine articles, to television shows, to media advertising, to fashionable clothing lines that seem to say it is ok to dress our young girls in clothing meant for older teens or young adult women. Everything is sexualized or sensual in it’s design…this marketing technique needs to be addressed. We are allowing this, when we purchase these types of products for our children and then wonder why behaviors seem so out of synch with the type of behaviors that should be appropriate to their ages.

Parents are the ultimate stop gap for their children…it is their money, for the most part, which purchases these items. If we raise the bar on what we expose our children to…then, the industries that our dollars support will have to adapt to the demand for a more traditional age appropriate level of decency in the children’s clothing, toys, accessories, music, television programing, advertising, etc.

In an age where we try to protect our children from predators on the streets, in our schools and in every other area of life; we need to understand that if we send the children mixed messages about what is appropriate role modeling; how can we expect them to know when someone inappropriately crosses the line in their conduct? Children learn their boundaries from the adults in their lives who set limits…so we need to re-examine how we condition our children by the choices that we make.

Children may still want the Bratz dolls over the Barbie dolls…who knows…children don’t always know what is in their best interests; however, the adults who care for them should know…shouldn’t they?

Today there will be news reports on the outcome of Senator Ted Kennedy’s brain surgery. He was scheduled to undergo brain surgery this morning at 9 am. Then he will be in the hospital for approximately 1 week. After the surgery he will be undergoing radiation and chemotherapy soon to treat the cancer. We wish him and his family well.

Also, it was announced that actress Tatum O’Neal was allegedly arrested in a drug bust over the weekend. She had been a competitor on an earlier season of Dancing with the Stars. She has admitted a past drug usage that played a part in her divorce from tennis star John McEnroe and custody of her children. This last couple of weeks has seemed volatile in the news.

Today, a music icon, Bo Diddley passed away at his home in florida from heart failure. He contributed much to the music scene in the early years of the rock and roll beat.

Fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent died…he had been ill for some time. He was 71 years old and is credited with making it fashionable for women to wear pant suits.

History was made in the allotment of delagates for Michigan and Florida. There was much brouhaha about who would get the opportunity to cast their votes. All of the delagates will get to vote however, their votes will each only count for half. No one is satisfied with this agreement…however, the only other obvious solution was being touted was to throw out their votes…that too, was unacceptable. So, the democratic convention is penalizing Michigan and Florida for having their primaries earlier than the democratic party condoned.

This week proves to be no less traumatic than last week. Stay tuned!

For those of you considering piercing your body parts…it would be wise to heed the words of a young man who is now hospitalized with a MRSA infection. A Missouri teen pierced his lip with an un-sterilized needle that he found in a medicine cabinet.

A few days later he found sores on his body and was achy all over. He has been diagnosed with an MRSA infection that is resistant to antibiotics. The doctors have said that the infection has spread thoughout his whole body. He wants to get the message out to others not to do what he did because of the consequences.
