Soap saves lives by reducing the transmission of infections and diseases. There is a Global Soap Project that is using donated soap to help save lives around poorer nations.

In America we take so many things for granted. If we get sick, we go to the pharmacy and pick up over the counter medication that can help us get well. Other times, we go to the doctor and get prescription medicine to help us get well from an infection or sickness. We are blessed. We have instant access to information to help keep ourselves well.

The best thing is that we have been taught that washing our hands well with soap can help to keep us healthy. We have access to soap and water on a regular basis. Not everyone is so lucky. What they don’t know and don’t have access to can harm them or kill them. Soap and water save lives and there is a Global Soap Project that you may not be aware of to get soap into the hands of people who are in need of it, to stay well.

The Global Soap Project was started by Derreck Kayongo. His father was a soap maker in Uganda. When Derreck came to the United States, he was amazed to discover that hotels put fresh bars of soap in the hotel rooms every day; discarding the used soaps. This began the idea of the Global Soap Project as Derreck knew the importance of having soap to help combat sickness and disease. Just imagine the difference having plenty of soap and water would make in refugee camps.

It is costly to get soap, in many areas of the world, and poorer nations cannot afford the luxury of throwing away bars of soap that are barely used. The Bible says to those whom much is given, much is expected in return; we have a responsibility to do what we can to help those that are less well off. This is such a simple thing to do.

Derreck began to think of how to recycle the soap and distribute it to people in need. He began to contact hotels about donating soaps to be recycled. He has a website that encourages people to get involved in the donation, recycling and distribution of soap that has been cleaned, recycled and inspected for impurities. This has the potential of helping to save and improve lives.

In America, we understand that it is important to use soap and water anytime we are handling food or drinks; or when working with people who are sick, after using the restroom, or changing diapers or bathing young children who have not been trained yet about sanitation. The Centers for Disease Control has a wonderful article about hand washing and gives the particulars on how to do it properly to prevent the spread of diseases or illnesses. If people around the world could have access to the soap that is thrown away in landfills every year it could help millions of lives that die from contact with diseases and symptoms such as diarrhea.

This time of year families are traveling on vacations and day trips staying at hotels. Why not spread the word at the hotels, about the Global Soap Project, that you are staying at or saving the soap that your family is given to use throughout your hotel stay. The project is based in Atlanta, Georgia. This is a worthwhile way of contributing to a betterment of the world. If nothing else, think locally.

There are many homeless people that could use individual bars of soap to use. Why not donate to a homeless shelter in your area? This is such a great idea to bless others with the things that we take for granted, won’t you do what you can to help others less fortunate. Won’t you help Derrick and others like him who have a goal to save lives by donating soap, money or your time? Visit his site and see what you can do to lend some support, won’t you?

There are over 50 million hungry people in the United States. The Stamp Out Hunger food drive is doing its part to build up your local food bank. Help spread the word.

Wow, that is a mouthful for the title of this blog post…but, it is what it says it is. The National Association of Letter Carriers have committed themselves once again to their annual food drive. They do this to help combat hunger. In the last two years in the United States, more than 50 million people have found themselves living in homes that don’t have enough food. This is outrageous, we can all do something to help. No one should go hungry in a country that supplies other nations with food from our surplus produce that farmers work so hard to grow.

You may say, I am only one person…what can i do? You can support the National Association of Letter Carriers help stamp out hunger by leaving a bag at your mail box, on Saturday May 14, 2011, with non-perishable food items. That is only 2 days from now. Make sure that the items you are donating are not out of date or in danger of expiring any time soon. Don’t have a lot to give; give what you can. If you are blessed enough to have the means to give…give generously; we all have a responsibility to share our blessings with others.

Support businesses and organizations that sponsor the annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive. This is an amazing grass roots program that blesses your local food banks. All the food collected by your local mail carrier stays in your local area. The people you help may be your own friends, family or neighbors. With the economy being so challenging in recent years more people are affected by not having enough to eat. The numbers of children in homes without enough food is rising. The elderly are having a harder time making ends meet. Young wage earners are finding themselves without steady income to support their families sufficiently. Natural disasters have hurt many families and those people still need to eat. Churches can’t do it all…they need our help to provide food for those who are struggling with hunger! Won’t you help?

Would you like to learn more? Visit their website here: Stamp Out Hunger and if you happen to have a Facebook account or a Twitter account…then Like them or Follow them to lend your support. Spread the work online and off. Tell others about the food drive…encourage others to donate.

Remember to thank your mail carrier. They are dedicated to helping people stamp out hunger in your community. Do you know someone who has had to use food from a food pantry or food bank? Tell them about my friend Connie who heads up a website that teaches people how to eat healthier with the food that they bring into their homes through SNAP, food pantries, commodities, and farmer’s markets. She does this in a way to help people stretch their budgets and to encourage the people who visit her website to form a community to share tips and ideas with one another. Her site isn’t just for food stamp users…but for anyone on a tight budget who wants and needs to eat well. Food Stamp Cooking Club

Making money online has gotten a terrible image due to the actions of some internet marketers; however, providing great products & service and raising the standards of conduct can help.

For every person who has attempted to make money online, there is a story, or two, of disappointment regarding the customer’s expectation either with the marketer’s product, or with their promises. The truth of the matter is that for a while now, some internet marketers have over- promised what their products can do and under-delivered on their promised services. This has led to a perception that all online marketers are scammers. That just isn’t true; there are many ethical marketers out there, but you have to really be willing to look for them.

So, how does someone who has a great product go about letting it be known that they have a great product and get people to buy without all of that ugly over the top hypey advertising. How does an honest marketer revolt and let others see what they are doing online to make money in an honest and ethical way? They do it by being genuine…they do it by being real; by creating great products your customers can use, and raising the standards of their own conduct and raising the standards of what their potential customers can expect.

This is what the Real Guys are doing…but their product is only available for the next few days until March 31, 2011. Watch this and see if there isn’t a part of this message about what they are trying to do with their product and the way that they are getting the word out about how they do business. They have a great product that teaches targeted traffic methods and list building and includes a private label rights aspect as well.

This video series helps teach people who are looking to make money online at home the best way to do it…and it includes a product that they themselves can market. It is a product that provides great content and allows them to market online with every confidence that they are providing real value to their customers. They have over-delivered a quality product with which everyday real people can make money in an honest and ethical way. The people behind the Real Guys are well known internet marketers who themselves have a strong and loyal group of customers who have great things to say about how each of them conducts their online businesses. Check it out the program here: Real Guys

*Just so you know…this article includes an affiliate link…and should you purchase anything from the Real Guys I would be compensated. However, that doesn’t mean that this isn’t a great product…because it is a great product…but it is only available for a few more days.

Private label rights product of quality called Real Guys Real Money is available starting today is changing the face of internet marketing by raising the standard of expectations from potential customers.

For the next seven days, a private label rights product of quality will be for sale called Real Guys Real Money. This PLR product is unique in several ways. For one thing, the three guys behind the product are selling this product for an extra ordinarily low price considering the amount of content available for an entrepreneur who is looking for a product to sell that has it all there and needs only to be rebranded in such a way as to make them look like a genius. You’ve never seen a product like this considering what all is included for such a low price. In this case, the low price does NOT mean low quality…take a look and you will immediately see the difference from other products online.

This product stands alone on a level of completeness. Everything is there for the purchaser to make a lot of money from a high standard product. This is not a hyped up product that is full of fluff or has empty spots where content should be. It really is a product that overdelivers. It contains everything it says it does and more. I believe that marketers Jeff Wellman, Paul Counts and Eric Holmlund have raised the bar of what a customer should be able to expect from a PLR product.

Internet marketing has gotten a bad reputation in the last few years because some marketers have thrown junk out on the market and promised customers the moon…and instead delivered blue cheese instead. The bar needed to be raised in the quality of products for sale and the Real Guys believe that it is time to provide products that stand very high over and above the other products available to potential customers. Each one of the Real Guys has a loyal customer base from past customers who are thrilled at the products and services that each brings to the table.

If you are looking to make money online, don’t get scammed by marketers that promise you jillions of dollars for merely clicking a button and having an instant online business. That is never going to happen. For one thing, an online business requires you to invest some elbow grease. Anything worth having is worth working for. The they have simply done a lot of the work for you…made it easier for you to make money in less time because they have eliminated a lot of the background work that goes behind each and every product that gets sold in the online money making products available for sale.

Go check out this product and see for yourself what the Real Guys can deliver to a person who is looking to earn some Real Money in a legitimate way online. Check out the comments left behind by satisfied customers from each of these marketers past products if you aren’t sure that they are who they say they are!

Do churches have an obligation to avoid advertising activities/businesses that conflict with traditional spiritual values? Should they be selling ads on their online sites that are contrary to religious teachings?

I am going to step into some doggy do do here…but today on my Twitter stream I had someone wanting me to follow them. It was a pastor from a big church and he had a very large following. I did what I always do and check their profile and looked at their Twitter stream. What I saw not only saddened me but it made me mad. I want to challenge my readers here to think about their church and do a little comparison challenge. Churches are you sold out for God…or just sold out?

Within the first few tweets on their page, I saw tweets prompting the reader to “learn how to play poker”, to buy a specific insurance, to learn about electronic cigarettes, to team up with a beer company to buy the best T-shirts promoting beer, get a payday loans, promoting certain credit cards…etc. I understand the need to make money. I get that churches struggle to raise funds…but, to me this smacks of leading people into financial slavery, gamboling, destructive health habits, encouraging addictions and gives a stamp of approval to activities that ought not to be encouraged.

This is a church that is “sold out” plain and simple. If you don’t get my drift; these are paid ads that this pastor and church are condoning by putting tweets up on their page and trying to make money off of each link. Understand, this is only my opinion; however, some of these are things that are being promoted are contrary to traditional teachings of the scriptures.

Can I tell you what I didn’t see on this Pastor’s Twitter stream? There was no mention of God,no Godly things, no tweeting of scripture…no building up of the spiritual nature of the readers…no encouragement to seek a relationship with God. It upsets me…because I do believe in the power of social media to influence people; because of that, I believe that this pastor and his church are missing the mark. Not only are they wasting the opportunity to win souls for Christ…they are in effect…leading them away from a life that is dedicated to strengthening the readers relationship with salvation and living a life of service for God.

How do you feel when you hear or see such things? To me it feels like spiritual prostitution. I would not want to be judged by God for erring in such a hurtful way to the Kingdom of God. Scripture says that to those that have been given much, much is expected in return. They have the opportunity to win souls for Christ and they had best be about the Heavenly Father’s business. It is hard to have respect for Gods values when some teachers, preachers and those in spiritual leadership make it appear as if it is ok to participate in these areas of life that God instructs us to avoid.

Do you challenge yourself to be authentic to your Christian faith online? How do you make sure that you aren’t contrasting what you say you believe with your personal conduct and interactions online?

Bath salts are being used and abused for a drug induced "high". This is not illegal but it is a very dangerous trend that many parents, police & medical personnel are just becoming aware of.

It is sad but true, bath salts have a genuine use for the body interested in health and wellness; but, bath salts are now being misused as a drug to achieve some sort of a high. Bath salts are generally used as a body soak and exfoliant. When used in this way, true bath salts (typically epsom salts mixed with fragrance beads and water softening agents) are a balm to achy muscles and dry skin. These are not dangerous!

However, there are products being labeled as “bath salts” that are powders packed in small tea bag sized envelopes and advertised as legal substitutions; merely to make money. They are being sold on the shelves of convience stores, truck stops and head shops all around the country; as well as online. They are marketed as bath salts, when those who produce these products know full well that they are not being used for that purpose.

Those who produce, market or sell these items should be held accountable for those who have had their lives destroyed by their products. Their intended use is for individuals who are looking for a drug induced high. Business selling them should be forced to removed them from their stores in my opinion. In fact, some states & communities are banning their sales…but, we need to increase awareness of this issue; before the use of these products becomes more widespread.

The powders are snorted, smoked or injected. This product is equal in intensity to meth in it’s effects on the human body and mind. It can be addictive even when the user experiences terrible effects during usage. Some people have committed murder, attempted suicide or just gone on a violent, destructive bender while using these products. Emergency rooms, police and poison control centers are seeing an increase in calls in areas where these products are being sold.

Children and adults can purchase a package of “bath salts” for approximately $20 or so. Unfortunately these things can be purchased online too. A parent seeing one of these packages may not realize that it is a drug with very harmful effects. These products have names like Cosmic blast, Vanilla Sky, Red Dove, White Lightning, Hurricane Charlie, and Bliss or Ivory Wave…they sound like a generic aromatherapy type of product; these packages are anything but. It is un-believable that this product is allowed to be sold; knowing that lives are being ruined. These legal substitutes are chemical stimulants designed to achieve a physical/psychological high and are extremely deadly. They have strong stimulants inside the packages which closely copy the effects on the body like speed or ephedra.

The problem is that these legal substitutes are not something that the DEA regulates. However, the damage these drugs do is causes dangerous reactions that often produce paranoia, violence and psychological terror that can not only endanger the user (who willingly takes that chance); but also affects anyone who is unfortunate enough to run into someone under the influence of such an un-predictable drug.

Some people abusing these bath salts, have described seeing visions of, aliens, devils or demons and attacking themselves or others because of those visions. If you see this stuff being sold…report it to the authorities. If you know someone using these products get them help immediately; report it to a poison control center and get them in to see medical personnel right away before they harm themselves or someone else. Schools should be prepared for the influence of these products as well by having drug counselors on speed dial. Educating individuals who are susceptible to the influence of using drugs to escape reality is going to be very important as this trend becomes more commonly known. Becoming aware of this trend of abusing bath salts could help you spot the danger and help to save lives.

The internet allows you to share your faith online. Living a life that sticks with Christian values, talking about it in the digital media and reaching people right where they are online.

Baby Boomers, do you remember the old-time style of witnessing? You know, standing on the corner or knocking on the doors of strangers and telling them the good news about Jesus, the son of God? It was truly a commitment to the instruction of scripture, for the children of God, to go into the world and spread good news.

The Good News meaning that Jesus was born the son of God, come into the world to offer hope to a lost and dying world that they might accept him, repent of their sins and grow in their relationship with God the Father and have eternal life with him in Heaven, instead of living a sinful life of destruction and pain.

I have admiration for those who can and have witnessed in that way door to door or on the streets. It is not for everyone however, and it is not the only way to win souls. Society has changed and in some ways not for the better. Personal safety issues are part of the equation. It simply is not safe to send teens or young people into settings where they are encouraged to step foot into the homes of strangers where they may, or may not, be wanted. Today’s secular world has little respect for life, or for Christian values.

Today, that type of witnessing still happens on some level…but, times have changed in the way that we deliver the good news. We still need to honor and perform the great commission (the task of evangelizing) around the world; however, our approach must be different to be considered highly effective. People’s hearts are hard and their sins are proudly displayed and openly encouraged by the misguided members of our society.

We have to bring the message to where they are; and, many people are online.

The reasons for changing how we deliver the message of Salvation to the lost are varied. To get the word out to the masses you must take the message to where the people gather together. The biggest arena today for ministry is the internet; not a superdome or sports arena. This could include websites, blogs, webinars, tele-seminars, social media, tele-casts,news-letters or even, advertising spots.

The opportunities are endless as people are spending untold hours online. Getting their attention and helping them to live their lives for Jesus in a way that “sticks” is important because they are constantly being bombarded with messages in the media that conflict with a life’s goal of living in Heaven.

Just think about how the enemy, Satan, is reaching out to people online; both the Sinners and the Saints. The temptations and the opportunities to lead them into a continual life of sin is right there at their fingertips.

There are sinful things online that become addictive and their “drug of choice” is always there waiting for them to connect. Shouldn’t the messengers of God be there as well? Why can’t a word, a thought/idea, a scripture or an encouragement to do what’s right in the sight of the Lord be just as available as the sinful content at the click of a mouse online? It can be if Christian people would join this writing project to encourage people to come to know God and apply his life principles to their lives.

So it is, that the message of God’s love and his plan of Salvation is still desperately needed to be broadcast around the globe so that every ear may hear, and every eye may see, so that every tongue has the opportunity to confess Jesus is the son of God and their own personal Lord and Savior; BEFORE the rapture takes place.

Believe it or not, some have not had the opportunity to know of God’s love. Missionaries around the world can tell you that from experience. We must employ every means possible to reach out to a lost and hurting world so that everyone can know the love of God, experience his protective power, and the fullness of living in his service.

Whatever your circle of influence is, if you are a Christian you are called to proclaim the message that Jesus died on the cross and rose again so that each and every person who confesses their sins and sincerely repents choosing to live by God’s commandments will be allowed into Heaven when the trumpet sounds.

Not every person has the personality, the skills, or the Biblical knowledge to knock on doors or able to stand on the street corners and win souls for the Kingdom. However, by choosing to #LiveSticky in a public way online, you have even more opportunities to have an outreach that you may not have access to otherwise. Souls can be saved, seeds can be planted, and lives can be impacted in a very real way.

Be a witness, be an encourager, be a good listener and look for opportunities to be a lighthouse. Lead by shining God’s light and guiding people to him through your online relationships and interactions. Offer hope to people who have been hurt and lost or broken in life; only God can heal their lives. Let the local churches and ministries help develop those people to a life of discipleship…but, be a vital part of opening their hearts to the call of God for their salvation.

That is what #LiveSticky is all about. Won’t you be bold and commit to living your faith out loud online? I’m going to try to be more bold online. You can follow me on

Minding your own business on Twitter can mean a multitude of things; truly harnessing the power of social media to interact with like-minded individuals to accomplish your goals.

I know it has been said quite often but there are people who love Twitter and there are those who just are purely unmoved by the impact that Twitter has. Much of that controversy depends I think on why you use Twitter and how you use it. I think in the beginning it was exactly what it said it was which is social media…meaning people used it to connect and socialize. Then came those who thought that they could harness the power of Twitter to make a killing with their businesses on it. Although many are finding that Twitter does indeed bring them much needed spotlighting on their area of impact…many more were disappointed in their expectation that Twitter was going to BE the answer to their business success.

Twitter is not a place to be a wallflower. You have to speak with others, comment on things that they say; break the ice with someone you may not be familiar with. You are in charge of who you accept into your Twitter stream or conversation by who you follow and who you allow to follow you. Choose wisely based on what you are trying to accomplish on Twitter. In other words, choose people to interact with who interest you, don’t offend you and last but not least people who support your personal growth as a person, business owner or in an area of impact that you wish to be a part of.

The most successful people who use Twitter still understand it’s basic component and that is the power of connection whether it be connecting to other Twitter users have a social relationship or to bring people together for a common cause, interest or purpose…Twitter is a boon. People who are already interested in your “business” aspect are predisposed to interact with you. If your business is to get a message out on a certain subject…there are people out there who are predisposed to interact with you. It is the same. Most importantly Twitter is about relationships. People who love Twitter get that. They harness that understanding to meet, greet and connect with like-minded people.

Like any positive and productive and long-standing relationship it needs time, attention and respect. Twitter not working for you? Think about how you are using it. Are you talking at people, or with people? Are you exchanging thoughts/ideas or interactions that not only benefit you but benefit others in a way that they can appreciate you?

So whatever you are about, wanting to share, hoping to achieve, wishing to impact; let’s remember that you need to be aware of not only “minding your own business” on Twitter; but consider some other issues as well. Take the time to support, encourage, draw out and interact with those people who you can enjoy some spending time with and be your authentic self; just like in your real, everyday offline life! Twitter is your social network whether you use it to connect to famous celebrities, find friendship, support social causes, spotlight non-profits, proclaim your faith, or brand your business and gain customers. Whatever you use Twitter for, just remember that your words have impact as do your connections & relationships; make the best of it.

The historic Belding Clock Tower is in danger of being torn down by the Electrolux company. There is an effort to gain support to sustain the clock tower & part of the historic silk mill.

For the town in Michigan known as Belding, saving time is critical for their self image. You see, Belding, Michigan got its very name by honoring the Belding family; they built a business with their silk mills and thereby, provided a way of life for those who chose to live along the banks of the river. These days, there is not much use for the structures except for its very image; which many use in their letterheads or in their desire for buying or selling collectibles. This historic structure needs some upkeep done soon to preserve not only it’s history; but, to carry it into the next generation.

Many people are unaware that Electrolux recently repurchased the existing buildings with the intention of tearing down the remaining silk mill buildings, as well as the clock tower. This is heartbreaking for those past and present residents of Belding. Removing the buildings would not only change the face of the small town; but, it would create a hole in the patchwork of historical buildings of the area and diminish the importance of the contribution that the Belding brothers brought to the area. The brothers created a rich legacy through their silk mill operation and through their contributions to the town known as Belding today.

How does one go about determining the value of preserving history and its impact on the future? I mean, think about it…everyone values these things differently. However, when there is a rising up of a collective outcry from not only residents of the community but those in surrounding areas; one would think that some kind of effort could be made by a corporation as large and industrious as Electrolux. They are a corporation that prides itself on sustainability.

My online dictionary says this about sustainability:

1.

to support, hold, or bear up from below; bear the weight of, as a structure.

2.

to bear (a burden, charge, etc.)

3.

to undergo, experience, or suffer (injury, loss, etc.); endure without giving way or yielding.

4.

to keep (a person, the mind, the spirits, etc.) from giving way, as under trial or affliction.

5.

to keep up or keep going, as an action or process: to sustain a conversation.

6.

to supply with food, drink, and other necessities of life.

7.

to provide for (an institution or the like) by furnishing means or funds.

8.

to support (a cause or the like) by aid or approval.

Is this not the rallying cry of those who wish to SUSTAIN the Belding Clock Tower and possibly restore part of the silk mill? This is the statement I found on an Electrolux site that discusses their view on sustainability: We can make a positive contribution to sustainable development both through our operations and our products. We are continually working to reduce energy consumption from products and emissions from factories; working to ensure that our employees and business partners are treated fairly; and striving to be a good neighbour in the communities in which we operate. This is where I found that information: http://group.electrolux.com/en/category/sustainability/ . I believe that Electrolux can be instrumental in finding a way to sustain the Belding Clock Tower and possibly a portion of the silk mill.

My family recently made a trip to the Belrockton museum in Belding, which coincidently also used to house female workers from the silk mills. This “dormitory” housed approximately 100 workers…2 women to a bed, approximately 40 women to a floor in this 3 story building. Believe it or not, this dormitory had the latest plumbing; two indoor toilets, two showers and two sinks on each floor for those 40 women. It wasn’t long, I am sure, before they discovered that this was not sufficient for the number of women residents. There’s much history, not only on the silk mills and the clock tower; but also on area businesses, people and intriguing trivia on the society of Belding.

We were blessed to visit the museum on a clear fall day and we could view the Belding clock tower from the 3rd floor. A wonderful hostess named, Janet H., was full of helpful information. She shared with us knowledge about how the building has been used over the years. It housed all those young women and a matron, who stood watch over her charges.

During the Great Depression, the building housed young people who were employed through the National Youth Administration, part of the New Deal. The building was and is beautiful. I could well imagine the people who built their lives around the silk mill and set their lives in motion to the ticking/chiming from the clock tower. There was a boardwalk across from the Belrockton which is where many of the young women who lived there were courted by their beaus. I looked through out the doors made by fine craftsman onto porches and verandas; which bespoke of a golden era, where ladies were treated like ladies and men had to come to call on them in the parlor under the watchful eyes of their chaperons. Life was simpler then, in many ways, but still…time had great meaning and the clock tower held great significance in the daily lives of those in Belding.

The importance of the clock tower is no less today. Its hands may need the skill of a clock maintenance person and the brick may need some skilled workers to restore it to its prime…but, the people who live there today need it no less now, then they did then. To keep time, to provide a backdrop to their daily lives…to carry into the future, generations of people who know the value of hard work, ingenuity, productivity; and to pass along knowledge that is handed down and preserved for the good of those who are to come along in the years to come. Please join in spreading the awareness of the goal of saving time by pushing for the restoration of the Belding clock tower. It isn’t just about turning back the hands of time to honor the past; but, to also draw a line in the sand in allowing the precious assets, that the Belding community has, to deteriorate past the point of restoration.

I can’t help but think of some of the projects that Extreme Home Makeover program has taken on. They have the knowledge, the collective forces that seem to jump start building projects that benefit communities. Why couldn’t someone approach them about looking into this project? Electrolux has expressed a willingness, in interviews, to listen to the ideas of community members.

I am all for that, as I believe that sustainability also means gathering up those things that have value and shoring them up in a way that allows them to continue being something of valuable to a community; to not allow the buildings to become refuse for the landfill, to provide a guiding light to those who wish to connect the solid foundation of the past to the cutting edge of future growth and independence for those willing to invest time, money, energy and awareness.

Here is a link to a video my friend Harvey Poling did regarding what the Silk Mill Clock Tower in Belding could look like once it is restored: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6OaGyjOnT7A . Please join those who care by checking out the awareness that concerned citizens are trying to share on Facebook here: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000545188161#!/pages/Save-Beldings-Clock-Tower/128424987210227?v=wall . Who knows, by sharing this information, maybe community members, business owners, historical societies and architectural afficionados could find a way to come together, cut the red tape and make this happen in a way that benefits the most people.

Social media opens the door to conversations about what is acceptable to share online and what limitations should be applied. Do people expect support or controversial reactions?

This week, a woman received alot of attention because she chose to document her abortion in real time on Twitter. I won’t mention the womans name because I feel like if I do that I am giving her more of the drug (called attention) and that is not something that i want to do. However, I do think it is important enough of a subject that it does warrant a commentary on the whole idea of using social media as a vehicle to voice controversial subjects/actions; and, the impact that it has on American society.

First off, I want to say that I did not join in or comment on her Twitter stream because I don’t think that she is looking so much for conversation about her choice to abort a pregnancy, as she is looking for agreement with her right to do so, as well as some notoriety. She says that she was looking for support from her friends during the abortion.

See, the back story is that this woman has a 4 year old special needs son. She lives with the child and her boyfriend (the father of this child she is trying to abort). I wonder what he thinks…if he is as much in support of the public abortion as she is? In her twitter stream she called this child she was carrying a “thing”, a thing that didn’t have sex organs yet; in relationship to another twitter persons tweet for life.

I am trying to imagine what a man would think about his child being called a thing? What about grandparents, aunts/uncles, cousins or the woman’s young son when he grows up…how do, or will, any of them feel about this abortion? Should their opinions count? How does abortion impact those who are in relationships with people who choose abortion as their path? Does it create issues between them if they are in disagreement with the choice to have an abortion?

According to the news articles that I have read, this adult woman had a first pregnancy which was allegedly life threatening to her. She was “advised” not to get pregnant again because of that first pregnancy and the high risk that she endured. So, from what I understand from the various articles on the subject…she decided that if she were to get pregnant again she would have an abortion to end it. Obviously, whatever form of birth control they were using was not effective because she became pregnant.

When she discovered that she was pregnant she allegedly tweeted that she was pregnant. She found out early that she was indeed pregnant so that allowed her to use the chemical form of abortion called RU486. Since she went this route…she has been tweeting the process. Telling of the cramping, the bleeding, and all of the other gory details. This process can take days. This process of abortion can be dangerous…but, she seems to believe that it is worth the risk.

I do not believe in abortion…and it seems to me that it is a gamble with her life either way…either from carrying the pregnancy as far as is humanly possible or, from having the abortion. I would not wish a high risk pregnancy on anyone; however, I personally would have more respect for her had she tried to carry this baby to term. Even if she did not want to raise the child…she could attempt to give it life and place the child for adoption.

Some people have been very supportive of what she is doing…others are not. After all, abortion is a very polarizing subject. People react according to their personal beliefs, experiences, and values. This woman also says that she is an athiest. From my visit to her Twitter stream I found her to be not only vocal about the abortion but also about religion and other subjects, such as foster care. She like anyone in America has a right to voice her opinion. Yet, she uses language that many would deem vulgar or filled with obsenities; hardly language that one would use to try to educate or pursuade another person towards their way of thinking on a particular subject. She allegedly says that she is astonished at the level of reaction and attention that her attempt to “educate” people about abortion has attracted.

I find that hard to believe. I don’t think that you choose to go against traditional beliefs, values, and lifestyle without expecting others to have a strong reaction to it. I happen to believe that for whatever reason, the very fact that many other people find her actions (regarding the abortion) and beliefs (religion) so wrong and offensive, gives her a sense of, her against the world… and I think in her mind, it empowers her. Especially when those who oppose her strongly, wrongly attack her personally in their objection to what she has chosen to do. Unfortunately, it seems that some people have even threatened her life…not only is that wrong…it is illegal. The authorities will be involved in those situations appropriately, I am sure.

Understand, she is going to do what she wants to do; what we in this country have legally allowed her and any other woman that chooses to; and, that is to be able to legally abort the life of her child. However, I myself do not wish to be watching her do what I myself find personally wrong. I do believe in God and I believe in spiritual consequences. She says that she doesn’t believe in God. That is probably true…because I dont think it is easy to do what she is doing and have a close relationship with God…who i believe is the author of life.

A great number of women who have abortions suffer in later years because of their decision to abort. They have emotional, physical and spiritual damage to their beings. Some do not and continue to go on and have repeat abortions according to what their conscience dictates. Legally this is allowed in the United States; it is unfortunate in my opinion.

She doesn’t appear to care about my opinion or anyone elses probably. By giving her more attention, it feeds the flames. However, in my opinion the taking of the life of her child and throwing it away is wrong. Once the child was conceived…it should have the right to be born. What if she gets pregnant again in the future? Why not pursue a permanent solution to her pregnancy potential?

What about her life…the one that potentially could be threatened should she try to carry the baby (she calls it cells)? Calling the baby a clump of cells is an attempt to deny the value of the life she carried. Well, in my opinion…once she was told that it would be life threatening, in the future, for her to become pregnant; then, if she felt that she needed to protect her life…she either should have avoided sex (not practical) or she should have sought some permanent means of birth control such as having her tubes tied, or having a partial hysterectomy… or by choosing a sexual partner who had also taken drastic means of curbing the possibility of creating a pregnancy. A combination of those choices would have ensured that she would not have become pregnant.

This whole subject opens to the door to a discussion about social media and what is acceptable, what will be allowed…what will people endorse or reject. What are the socially acceptable standards or limitations? Will we see someone comitting crimes and tweeting about it? Or posting it on Facebook, or Myspace? It is the testing of those limits that creates this drive to be the person that pushes the envelope. It creates a media sensation or a backwards sort of fame. It is horribly sad to me that in this case it was at the expense of the life of an unborn child. What are your thoughts?
