Children who are prescribed eyeglasses are often self conscious & refuse to wear them. Ficklets eyeglass charms help solve that problem by building a confident self esteem with fashion wear.

Fashion Eyeglasses Charms Even The Most Self Conscious

Let’s be honest, most children who are told that they must wear glasses will often not be thrilled with the idea of having to wear eyeglasses. For many children, it is the idea that others will make fun of them or, cause them to be viewed as being different from other children their own age. Being bullied because you are visually impaired and have to wear glasses can cause a child to refuse to wear them, out of fear of being made fun of.

No one want to be made to feel self conscious about themselves, especially at certain ages when it is most important to fit in with their peers. We’ve come along way since the days of having a choice between wearing heavy black plastic frames or wire frames that were basically your only choices.

Still, everyone likes to look their best and there are many fashion frames from which someone can choose to fit the shape of their face and their sense of style. On the other hand, if you are looking to change things up so that you don’t get bored with a certain look once you’ve purchased your eyeglass frames; there wasn’t much you could do except buy multiple sets of glasses…until now.

Ros Guerrero is the owner of a company that has solved this problem. She invented eyeglass charms that add a bit of decorator style to your eye wear frames. Some of these charms are classic styles that are a great way to dress up your lenses for a night out…others are kind of funky colorful and fun charms. There are charms for adults, for girls and for boys too. I like the fact that there are charms that a child can choose from in their area of interest of art or sports.

There are also seasonal charms, pets/animals, colorful flowers, or charms that create awareness of issues such as breast cancer. Ros has created a variety of charms for you to choose from. These make great gifts too for just about any occasion! They are easy to attach and the fun is in the conversations that take place when others notice the charms attached to the glasses. It is a wonderful way to break the ice for children who may have trouble initiating conversations with others.

The really neat thing about Ros’ company is that her daughter Gem was her inspiration. One day, Ros designed and attached her first set of charms to Gem’s glasses and sent her to school. Gem received so many compliments, in her special needs class, that the idea of Ficklets was born. Getting noticed wearing glasses, for a child, is not always a positive experience. Ficklets charms can positively influence how a child perceives wearing their eye wear. After all, if a child won’t wear their glasses how can they possibly help their eyesight? Much of a person’s education is learned visually. If a persons vision is impaired in any way, it is only logical that getting them to commit to wearing their glasses is important, right?

Ros & Gem ~*~The designer & The inspiration

As you know, children aren’t the only ones who wear glasses. What’s really great about eye wear today is the fact that there are so many choices. Still, it is the same for adults…who wants to wear the same old- same old look, day after day. There are classic charms for female adults as well. The added touch of these charms can dress up your look at work or, for a night out making you feel stylish and attractive. Everyone is at their best when they feel confident and assured about their appearance. Changing your look can be costly. It’s a lot more affordable to change up the look of your present glasses by purchasing Ficklets than it is to go out and purchase an extra set of frames.

Do you know someone who refuses to wear their glasses because they are self conscious about the way they look? Have you ever known someone whose life was changed because their vision was improved by wearing glasses? If so, then you understand the importance that Ficklets can play when it comes to self esteem and wearing prescription glasses. Are you thinking of someone in your life who would appreciate a pair of Ficklets? If so…what are you waiting for? Thanks Ros & Gem for helping us to see things more beautifully!

Check out this young girls reaction to her Ficklets: http://www.youtube.com/user/Ficklets?feature=mhum

Pet ownership can improve the quality of life for the elderly, disabled, or those struggling with a chronic illness or disease. Pets can teach responsibility and improve a person's health.

People have pets for a variety of reasons. When children are in the home they often beg to have a pet in the house. Parents will say yeah or nay based on finances, maturity level of the child, convience or inconvience to the family as well as space issues. Pets can be a very good thing whether the owner is a child or an adult and they can improve your life.

For children, pets provide companionship, responsibility, compassion and they encourage physical activity. For adults…surprisingly they provide the same thing. The bond that can develop between human and animal is an amazing thing. Pets have been shown to reduce blood pressure, cholesterol, a sense of loneliness or emptyness…as well as lowering a person’s triglyceride level. Pets need to be walked and groomed…this encourages exercise for both the pet and the owner.

People who are struggling with chronic illness/disease such as cancer or diabeties; or are isolated from an active social life really tend to bond with their pets. In some nursing homes, there is a resident cat or dog who can provide an emotional connection for the elderly, or terminally ill, who are not able to bring in their own pets to the facility. These pet/human relationships are healthy and supplies them both with a mutual nurturing relationship providing comfort and care.

In some cases, pets can serve a dual purpose in that they also function as a service provider for the disabled when properly trained. There is a great organization called Paws With A Cause that is celebrating 30 years of positive impact. I applaud them and the work that they do. You can learn more about them and the work that they do here: http://www.pawswithacause.org/history.asp . If you can provide them some support please do. You wont be disappointed because the work that they do gives back to the community and the individuals in it. Do you know of a special relationship between a person and their pet that you could share with the readers?

September is National Emergency Preparedness Month; there are things you can do to prepare for an emergency with your family's survival in mind. Are you ready?

September has been known for its National Emergency Preparedness Month for the last 6 years. With so many recent disasters and tragedies, I got to wondering if enough people knew about it and whether they were ready or prepared for any such unexpected surprises. Anyone who watches the news quickly learns just how fast things can change whether it be through national security issues, natural disasters-flooding, earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, accidents, man-made tragedies such as deliberately set wildfires, health related emergencies such as flu outbreaks or other contagious diseases, war or violent riots…or even disruptions in electrical grid supplies or communication supplies such as radio, phone, television broadcasting and the like. Planning ahead and doing some simple tasks to prepare for situations such as these could make all the difference in how you and your loved ones fare-are you ready?

Most people really do not know how to start preparing. That is what National Preparedness Month is all about. I want to share a couple of websites with you so that you can benefit from the information they provide to help you get ready to face whatever kind of emergency situation you are faced with.

Before I do that, I would like to say that there are some very simple things you can do to prepare for any difficulty you may face. The other sites will help you to prepare for other specific disasters or emergencies. First off, putting together a simple emergency kit is important.

Start with a good sized tote and fill it with a couple of days supplies of non-perishable food stuff-this may include things like formula (if a baby is in the house) or soft foods for the elderly, at least a 3-5 day supply of water for each person in the family, high energy protein bars, small containers of medication in waterproof containers for chronic conditions, toilette paper, waterproof matches, flashlights & batteries, cell phone & charger, important documents & ID, blankets, and change of clothing, a can opener,a small radio, walkie-talkies or hand held CB, hand sanitizer gel, small cook stove or portable small grill with fuel, camping lantern, small portable folded rain poncho, small foil folded emergency blanket to retain warmth, hand or foot chemical foot warmer packets, first aid kit, these are all basics. You think about what you or a specific family member needs to survive several days without help. Make your kit tailor made for your family’s survival in mind. Dont forget the family pets…keep emergency pet food and water supply for them as well. This site may help you to discover what to put in your kit: http://www.ready.gov/america/npm09/getakit.html

Think about where you live and what kind of natural disasters happen often in your area…if you are prone to flooding…then definately prepare for that…not only in your home…but in your vehicle as well. Have something handy in your vehicle that will allow you to cut the seat belts & break the vehicle windows if you are trapped in flooded waters. Many people die each year because they can’t get their windows open due to water pressure on the windows. If your area is prone to tornadoes…learn about the safest place in your home to wait out the storm. The same thing with wildfires…do you have an emergency evacuation plan worked out? You get the idea, keeping safety and well-being in mind, take action.

Another thing I learned about recently is a battery company that is doing it’s part to help prepare cities that are vulnerable to weather related emergencies. They are donating what they call hours of power by donating batteries to first reponders and law enforcement authorities in those cities by having visitors to their blog simply click on a button. There is no cost, you dont have to sign up for anything…you simply click on their button. This is something everyone with a computer can do. Check it out here and click: http://www.duracell.com/us/hoursofpower/cities.asp or here: http://www.duracell.com/us/hoursofpower/safety-tips.asp .

Ok, now that you know what to do…get ready, get set…go prepare!

Dogs or pets must be watched carefully when at play for safety reasons just like toddlers or young children. There are natural dangers out there that you may not think put your pets at risk.

Last night sitting around the campfire with friends we had a scary moment. Our dogs were feeling left out of our fun; they were whinning in their kennel because they could see us sitting outdoors with friends and they wanted to be a part of it. So after the meal was done, all of the food was put away except for the small treat of half of a dog (broken into small pieces) for each of our two labs…we let them join us. This was fine until we encountered danger for our dogs that we never worried about before.

I know what most of you are thinking…it was the campfire. No! The dogs were fine around the campfire…they stay back far enough from that because of the heat it gives off. They were safe there. But, after they got all of the petting over with that they could stand; the puppies wanted to run around and play. My son started throwing some of the small apples that had fallen from the tree as they naturally shed excess apples that the trees cant support during the growing season. That went well until they ate the apples. That was all good.

What happened next, was that they started to wrestle over a stick. They do this all of the time. One will grab a large stick and sort of play keep away until the other dog takes it and does the same. They did this for a time and then got bored. So they picked up a large rock and my son would toss it and they would bring it back (a form of fetch), only to have it thrown again and then they would race each other to see who could get it first and bring it back.

That went on for some time until they got tired and flopped down on the ground to rest. Then out of the corner of my eye, I see one of my dogs try to chew the stone which was the size of a plum and just swallow it! Oh man…before I could get the words out to my son to take it away with the first chew the dog had swallowed it! Yikes…what to do.

Luckily one of the friends who was sitting around the campfire has a sister who works for a veternarian. She quickly called her and we got speedy advice on how to make the dog vomit up the stone. The stone was too large to pass the other way we were told. Always get the advice of a veternarian before you attempt any kind of treatments for your pets. Foreign objects in the stomachs of your pets can cause blockages or a twisted stomach; both of which can be fatal. The advice that we were given worked well by the way. I am not giving the advice here because I am not a vet and this advice might not be correct for another situation. Needless to say, this was very scary business for a family that loves their dogs.

Of course, most of us know that there are all kinds of dangers out there for our pets; but this particular danger I had never thought of because the dogs pick up these small stones all of the time and play keep away from one another. Sticks I know can be a danger too because running with them in their mouths can cause puncture wounds or choking if they trip and fall on the sticks too. So we try to make sure that the sticks are not too long and they are not pointed on the ends. But, this danger with the stone had never happened before; and, I never would have imagined that my dog would try to chew and swallow a stone. So, just take care when letting your pets play; treat them just like you would a toddler i guess…keep an eye on them all of the time! So glad to report both dogs are fine! I am grateful.
