October is a month when we hear alot about breast cancer awareness. This is important because truly breast cancer has to compete for attention in the media just like any other illness, disease or other chronic health issue for coverage. However, as we all know…breast cancer affects people more than one month out of the year so getting media attention is very important.
Why is media coverage important? It’s because it keeps the topic of conversation open so that people can contribute dollars for funding for research and support for those individuals who’s lives are affected by the disease. When people discuss the subject of breast cancer it is easy to assume that breast cancer is one disease; but, it is not. There are several forms of breast cancer and we must not lump all breast cancers together in our minds because it is like any other disease or illness in the fact that the tumors must be targeted for treatment; not every tumor or cyst responds to treatment in the same way. Therefore, we need knowledge to know the best way to treat each individual kind of breast cancer to get the most effective survival rates.
The key to effective treatment of all breast cancers is research and adequate funding for that research. Women have heard that they have a 1 in 8 chance of developing breast cancer; that is true over their lifetime. However, the reality is that the age of a woman plays a big part in those statistics. As a woman ages, her chance of developing breast cancer can increase. There are some great organizations out there who are doing their best to research and develop treatments for breast cancer or are creating support systems for breast cancer patients and their families.
So please, when you hear the term breast cancer; don’t lump all breast cancers together in your mind. Do your part and help to fund the research, find a way to support your local organizations that are actively improving the lives of those who are affected by breast cancer…volunteer, create an awareness in your circle of influence, donate money, or purchase items that help to fund the research behind these organizations.
It isn’t just women and their mothers, sisters or daughters who are diagnosed with breast cancer…men and boys are too. Just in case you are unaware of some of these great organizations or websites, I would like to include some links here to some wonderful information. Check them out…see what you can do to affect positive changes in the battle against breast cancer.
http://www.dslrf.org/army/ that is Dr. Susan Love’s Research Foundation
http://www.tnbcfoundation.org/tnbcinthenews.htm This is a great site with some wonderful articles full of information on Triple Negative Breast Cancer. TNBC is one of the lessor funded categories of breast cancer and it is less well known as well as one of the more aggressive breast cancers.
http://ww5.komen.org/getinvolved/getinvolved.html This site is the Susan G. Komen site and they do some amazing thing in the fundraising and education areas of breast cancer as well.
Please take action and help to fight breast cancer and it’s effects on our society…breast cancer takes too many men and women away from our communities and our families.
