Heros come in many shapes and sizes; they do inspiring things such as protect, serve, educate, create an awareness & should be acknowledged so that they can be an example.

I have been thinking alot about the word heros. I know that probably sounds a bit odd but there is good reason for my thoughts. Part of my reason for thinking on the concept of heros is because my husband and I work with the young children of our church and we are spending a month studying on “Super Heros”. Most of us have grown up with cartoon super heros who showed us super hero powers such as flying, or leaping over buildings, climbing up walls with spider webs coming from their hands, super strength and a whole variety of other special skills.

It got me to wondering what it is about heros that attracts us to them; what are they made of. Why do heros do the things that they do? Most of the time heros are fighting for justice, in other words fighting against the bad guys/gals, trying to protect other everyday non-heros from harm. I think as we grow up, our understanding of what a hero is changes a bit. I think we are attracted to the goodness in a hero or their ability to protect and to serve. It is admirable and desirable to be capable of doing the right thing, for the right reason.

In my mind, a hero is someone who does something unexpected in a challenging way that helps/protects/inspires/encourages another person who is not in a position to do it for themselves at the time. A hero is someone who makes a split second decision to reach out and make a difference even if the cost is high-such as a stranger who rushes to protect another person from a crime, a threat, a bad decision, or a moment of danger.

Sometimes a hero is a person who is “just doing their job” in their own words; but to another ordinary person their commitment to the deed is extra-ordinary because of the level of commitment to performing the deed comes with high risk or a high cost to the person choosing to take action. A police officer, a fireman/woman, a postal worker, a teacher, a store clerk, military men and women…the list goes on and on; these people are heros in my book.

What about the volunteer or caregiver who takes extra measure to seek a solution to another person in need? Are they a hero? What about people who put themselves out on the front line to fight for what they believe in even when it is not popular; are they heros? I believe that they are.

I think about those people who fight for the poor, aged, disabled, ill, those who wage a war against cancer, domestic violence, drug & alcohol addictions, human trafficking, homelessness, abortion, abuse/neglect, children without families or without basic needs being met. The people who champion for an awareness or for changes to existing circumstances just because it is the right thing to do…I believe these people are heros. They are an inspiration!

Miep Gies died yesterday at age 100. She was a hero but she didn’t like to think of herself that way. She was an office worker in the employ of Anne Frank’s father Otto Frank; she hid Anne Frank and her family and friends in a secret room in a warehouse during the years that Hitler was rounding up Jews to kill them, during the Holocaust. She is the woman who bicycled around the city finding food to feed them, and who eventually found the pages of Anne Frank’s diary when they were arrested. She risked her own life to do what was the right thing to do to protect other human beings in extra-ordinary difficult circumstances.

There are so many different kinds of heros in our every day lives if only we stop to think about it. I think the act of a hero is a call from God to step outside of ourselves to be the hands and feet of Jesus…to be the best person that we can be.

Do you know someone like this? Write me a comment and give them a little plug. Most heros are unsung heros because they don’t believe that they deserve attention for doing what they consider the right thing to do. And, maybe in one sense they don’t…because we should all be doing these things…but the truth of the matter is, that without examples how will others learn to be heros in their own right? We must hold up examples of special people who do acts of heroism…because in doing that we are encouraging more of that kind of behavior.

So is there a hero that you know of doing something wonderful? What is your hero made of…tell us all about them. Please comment here and let us know about this person and what they are doing to make the world a better place! Thanks for being a light!

From the crown of her head to the souls of her feet (and under the pedestal) the Statue Of Liberty is a very special part of the identity of the American culture. Ever since the terrorist attacks on our country on September 11, 2001; the crown of the Statue of Liberty has been closed to tourists out of concerns for the safety and well-being of her visitors. It was announced today that the crown will re-open to visitors on July 4th, 2009.

To all the sons and daughters in the armed forces (military) who have fought and defended our country’s honor, freedom and way of life…we say thank you; we can never thank you enough for your sacrifice. To those who made it possible to look upon the visage of Lady Liberty and to take pride in her message; we also are grateful. To those who have worked to give money to her restoration and those who have labored and done the work…we appreciate you. We must take good care of our symbol of independence and freedom, we must protect her from the elements and from all things which seek to destroy her message. In this way we can continue to inspire and impact the lives of others around the world.

Once again, Lady Liberty will be making a statement just by standing her ground and welcoming those who come to her. Of course, they are making some adjustments to the way things are handled regarding visitors; but that is ok. She will be open! People can once again begin to travel to the place where so many of our families were greeted when they came to this country to begin life anew with hope and expectation of a long, healthy and prosperous life as an American. The visitors will see the view of the shore from Lady Liberty’s crown.

There is such a rich history relating to the Statue of Liberty and how she came to represent freedom to those who traveled to the United States. The gift that was made of her to our country from the people of France; to the comfort that she brings to the hearts of those who have come here from around the world…Miss Liberty speaks volumes about all who have been oppressed and have since broken free from their oppressors. She is a marvel to look at and a reminder that we must always remember to lift up those who have not known such freedom in their lives.

I have been thinking about leadership alot lately and it’s direct connection to success or failure. Leadership whether it is in government, business, organizations, religions, education or, in personal relationships is very important. Not everyone can be an effective leader. There are more followers than leaders; so it is extremely important to follow the right person.

Whether a leader is skilled in certain areas determines how successful his/her leadership is. Leading is not for the fainthearted; you can’t please everyone or, be their friend. Some of the decisions a good leader has to make are extremely unpopular. You can have productive relationships though, that are built out of respect, authority, compassion and hard work. Those who are under your leadership have to know that you are informed and that you respect & understand their sacrifice to get the job done.

A good leader knows how to inspire, how to instruct, how to encourage, and how to redirect someone who is misguided, ill informed, has a poor work ethic or is saturated in a poor attitude. A good leader knows when to use incentives and when praise or recognition will be more effective.

I know our country is in the midst of some deep and difficult issues. Positive and productive leadership has never been more important. A good leader also recognizes when they are out of their league and seeks a higher counsel…someone who is an expert in the area of concern. I hope that those who are taking the reins of government leadership in our country are willing to lead with proper education and guidance… it is not a failure to admit that you don’t know all of the answers; it is a failure to not be willing to be educated in those areas. We have much to accomplish and overcome in a short period of time.

There is a great new book out by Lee Iacocca on leadership called, Where Have All Of The Leaders Gone? I recommend reading this one. This book gives some great advice on leading. It also gives a bit of background information on the automotive business.

With the financial crisis hitting our country and the obviously failing auto industry…Lee’s book is timely. I suggest that the new President elect Barack Obama consult with Mr. Iacocca on any proposed government bailout loan of the auto industry. There has been some criticism about President Bush’s alleged lack of response to the auto industry’s struggles. Now, if the American auto industry fails to succeed…we all will suffer the consequences. I think that we already have been …but, it is only going to get worse without addressing the issue in a real purposeful way. They are many businesses and employees who will be affected in a trickle down kind of action if and when the auto industry hits the roadblocks.

It would be wise to remember that whenever one major industry fails it generally has a domino effect on those sub-supportive businesses that supply the chain of industry. We need to figure out some answers before we are all out of jobs. We must demand competent leadership and hold them to a higher moral & ethical standard of conduct. We are tired of those in business and industry who are content to take the money at the top and move on when they get their rewards…not caring about the outcome for those under their leadership. Enough of the high salary CEO’s (or politicians) who don’t look long-term at the consequences of their decisions and their actions. Americans must demand success in our leaders because the potential impact of failure is unacceptable!
