Life throws challenges our way, how do we find faith or encouragement to go on and trust God when we don't like where we are or feel fearful?

How did we get here in this place that I don’t like? This place was not on my list of places to visit; and yet, here we are. We didn’t plan for this side trip nor did we have time to prepare; for the things that we will face while we are passing through. It is scary and unknown, and my loved ones are facing trials. I’ve been trying to see the good in the situations that they face and have been finding myself only seeing the problems looming large. I know it is human to worry, wonder and fret; but, we must remind ourselves that God, you ALONE are in charge.

That should be a comfort in itself; so then why do we fight it? Whenever we try to take control and steer our lives in the path that we think it should go…we are operating blindly; it is good to remind ourselves of that. For we only see our small portion of the jigsaw puzzle or road map. God, you DESIGNED the jigsaw puzzle and the map; you know where every single piece of the puzzle fits; you know which road to take to avoid additional hazzards.

God, you alone know how each piece of our lives are supposed to fit together to create something beautiful and whole. While we sometimes struggle to MAKE the pieces fit, and occasionally they may even appear to fit together for a time…in the end; we often discover our mistake in trying to force something to work that does not belong there at all.

We need you God to make sense of it all, to guide us in our decisions, our reactions, our ACCEPTANCE, of what is supposed to be. We need you to guide us in the areas of our lives to avoid and reject…to put our feet on the path that they belong on; even if it is dark and scary. For you are the light, by which we can be sure, to follow to the correct destination. Is it the obedience that you are looking for from us? Why is that so hard to remember to do?

Why do we worry, wonder and fret? It is the unknown that terrifies us. Imagination is usually a friendly companion in our daily lives, but in times of stress it can become the enemy towards building and strengthening our faith. We want to trust and be a pillar of strength and encouragement…but, there is still the uncertainty of how things will turn out. Do we feel worthy of a miracle in our lives when we desperately need it? Do we KNOW without a doubt that you love us ENOUGH to take care of our difficulties?

In the end, it doesn’t matter how we got where we are, nor does it matter if we like where we find ourselves…what does matter is how we choose to proceed; how we conduct ourselves in the midst of the challenges we face. In other words…

It is in our BEST INTEREST then to give up control, remove doubt and fear from the equasion, find courage, and expect miracles…trusting that even through the challenges…good will come. Knowing with certainty that lives will be changed, improved, and blessed. Thank you then God, for always being there; for loving us, and for helping us even when we are being problem children!

Inside of all of the news reports concerning Haiti and it's suffering after the earthquake come stories of sharing, compassion and a reminder of stone soup.

Can I just tell you that every day there is some new heartbreak in the news about the horrible things that are happening in Haiti. Those are real situations and people are really suffering. It is important to know of these things to make people aware so that people in the positions to help will do so. That pretty much means most people reading this blog post; whether it be giving money, donating time, creating an awareness, organizing shiploads of emergency supplies or medical personel. Contacting trusted organization like the Red Cross is another way to be charitable; you can find them here: http://www.redcross.org/

There is extreme hunger, thirst, a desperate need for shelter and personal safety…and again, a huge concern for predators intent on inflicting the horror of human trafficking/modern day slavery on the men, women and children caught in the natural disaster that is the earthquake that Haiti has suffered. Good things are happening too, but we don’t hear as much about that…but, we need to so that those helping to make a difference see that goodness can come out of tragedy.

But there are at least two positives that I want to point out, one is a miracle of another survivor who was found 15 days after the earthquake; a 17 year old girl, now that is a miracle! The other positive is a pat on the back for those that I saw on a news report who have had next to nothing to eat & drink; and yet, some of those same people have been sharing with their neighbors the last of their valuable items of food and drink. It reminded me of the old story, Stone Soup…Haiti is creating stone soup.

For those of you who don’t remember the story of Stone Soup; it is a story of a travelor who wanders into a village and teaches a lesson about working together and having compassion. The travelor is hungry and has nothing to eat so he asks a woman for some food. She denies him because she says she has nothing to give him. The travelor has a large pot but nothing to put into it. However, he asks the woman if he can use her fire for cooking and he goes to the well to get water for the pot he carries on his shoulder.

Curious, the woman asks him what he is going to cook. He tells her stone soup. He looks around the yard and finds a nice smooth rock. He cleans it off and drops it into the pot of water that is heating up on the fire. After some time, he tastes it and the woman asks him, how does it taste. He says well, it is not done yet. Then he mentions that normally he would add some carrots but, he doesn’t have any. The woman’s young son says that they have a few carrots in the side garden. The mother gives her ok to go get them and add them to the pot if he will share with her family some of his stone soup; he agrees and the child gathers the carrots to add to the pot.

It cooks for a while, and he tastes the soup…mentions that it needs some herbs. Of course by this time, the children are playing off to the side of the fire; and, one of the boys friends says that his mother has some wild onions growing by her picket fence and runs off to get them. When he comes back he brings his sister who has two potatoes that she dug up just that afternoon; and his mother follows with a handful of peas that she was cleaning for supper. Together they throw the wild onions and the chopped up potatoes into the pot as well as the peas that the woman had. The soup is starting to smell good. No one had ever heard of stone soup before and it wasn’t long before people were talking about it and coming to watch in case they may learn to make it for themselves.

The first village woman had gone to her friends house to tell of the stranger and his stone soup. Her friend says she must see this to learn how to make it as times are hard. She tells her friend that all she has to feed her family is one dead chicken that she was plucking when her friend came to tell her of the soup. She takes the chicken with her as she doesn’t want to lay it down on the dirty outdoor table.

When the women arrive the soup is sending up a lovely smell and people are starting to gather around the pot. There were young and old alike giving their advice on what to add and how it would taste. The pot was very large and so the woman with the chicken asks if she adds the chicken to the pot whether she could bring her family over to share the soup. Of course says the travelor…the chicken would be a wonderful addition to the soup. Excitement began to touch those around the fire…they started to think about what they had that could be added, for a small sample of the stone soup.

A husband and wife happened along in their wagon coming home from the mill. They had sacks of grain, and inside one of those sacks was some barley they were willing to share with the travelor and his pot for a portion for themselves. Into the pot went a couple of cups of barley. The crowd began to murmur amongst themselves about how good the stone soup would taste when it was done.

Another added some corn, a grandmother had some rice she was willing to share, and a teenager had some beans that he had been shelling for his mother…these they added to the pot. The travelor said it was nearly done…did anyone else have anything to share…and out of nowhere a rutabaga appeared, along with a few sticks of celery, some lentils, and a head of garlic, some green beans and a fat sausage or two.

It wasn’t long before the stranger said it was nearly done and did anyone have some bowls to serve it with; the people began to scurry home and came back with not only bowls and spoons but hungry family members who were thankful to have a meal; when earlier, they had no idea how they were going to find something to eat when alas, they only had an item or two to prepare. They were all grateful that the travelor had taught them how to make Stone Soup by sharing their blessings with one another.

This is the story of Haiti…i read a news item this week of neighbors who were sharing the last little bits they had with one another. One woman said, today I have this to share with my neighbors and friends…tomorrow they will share with me what they have. In this way we all shall have something to eat and drink.

In a time when most would understand that desperation has the tendency to bring out the worst in people (and for some it does); I want to celebrate those who in their desperation are finding ways to help one another. Whether they are sharing their food or water, trying to protect the people from human trafficking, looking for survivors, helping those grieving…or tending to the sick and dying in make shift hospitals…i want to say thank you for finding human compassion inside of yourselves and using it to help a nation trying to survive. God bless!

People in crisis sometimes ask for prayer on Twitter; do you respond or ignore that request? Twitter is built on relationships; do you believe in the power of prayer?

Tonight while Twittering, I had the opportunity to do something that I consider a priviledge; and, that is to pray for someone who needs it. A mother is in distress and asking for prayer for her baby son who is fighting to live. Is it someone that I know? No, it isn’t; does that matter? I don’t think so. People in need are, people in need…prayer addresses that need in a proactive way. Some people have a problem with Twitter requests for prayer. I don’t think that’s a problem; I think it is an effective and powerful use of Twitter. Twitter is built on relationships…if someone is offended by a request for prayer (help) then they will just unfollow; and that, is that.

So, on the recommendation of another person that I do follow…there was an urgent request for prayer for a baby who may or may not survive the night ( I hope he does and is a testimony to the power of God’s healing). I believe in God and the power of prayer. Faith is a muscle that must be exercised to grow and strengthen.

God says that whenever two or more agree together…he is there in the midst of it. So, by gathering unified people in prayer for a specific need…there is more power in that prayer. Will the beautiful baby boy live…I do not know; but, what I do know…is that I believe by joining with other believers online, in the moment of need, that God will send the comforter there to be with the child, his family, and friends who desperately need love and support.

So please God, you know the need, please help them out; touch the wee one and heal him. He needs the touch that only you can give! Please guide the doctors, nurses, technicians, and lab people to use the skills you have blessed them with. Help them to do what they humanly can do; and, please supply the miraculous touch that they can’t supply. Amen!

This isn’t the first time I have prayed for others online. There have been many instances. There will be more. It actually could be a ministry to pray for those online who request it. It is sort of like what i try to teach my children about hearing a siren…to me that means someone is in need; and as emergency personel, police, fire fighters/engines, etc go to help…we provide a little prayer support. Remember when you see a need posted on line asking for prayer; that it could be you in need next time…would you want people to respond or ignore your request for prayer? Do you believe in the power of prayer?

As we have demonstrated to the world over the last few months…we have to get our finances as a country and as a world under control. We must heal the breakdown of credit and the housing industry…the buying, selling and foreclosure of homes. We must address the nations dependency on oil from foreign countries. We must investigate and explore alternative forms of energy. We must address the dwindling funding that forms the foundation of education in both lower and higher education. We must find a way to insure those who have no medical insurance. We need to apply some solutions to the social security flux which will drain the funds because of the aging population. We must repair relationships with countries around the world that have been badly damaged over the last 8 years. We must continue to protect ourselves and others who are under siege from terrorists around the world. We must insure that our children have opportunities before them that children from other countries have.

I say we meaning, African Americans and all Americans, Democrats and Republics, conservatives and liberals, men and women…it doesn’t matter who you are…we are in this thing called life together…and that is how we have to approach solutions to the problems that we face as a country.

With an unprecedented stacked deck of Democrats in the House & Senate, as well as a Democratic President, we will have great expectations from Barack Obama as leader of the United States. Republicans have taken the heat for the condition of the United States for quite some time…now it is time for Democrats to prove their worth as they lead our citizens.

Is President elect Obama up to the task? He had better be…because it is unacceptable to think about the alternative; and, the impact it will have on this country if he fails at any one of the aforemented issues; as well as many, many more issues which are in need of major renovation to become healthy once again.

Hopefully, we will not, in our zeal to affect change in this country, continue to attack the basic values of conservative America. We are seeing escalating legal attacks on the defination of traditional views of marriage and family. We have people who are determined to stretch the defination to include gay marriages as a legally recognized state of marriage. There are those who seek to further liberal ideas such as legalizing marijuana and prostitution; or expanding the limits of abortion. It seems that traditional values in this country are being turning upside down…what has been considered to be right is now viewed as wrong and is prone to challenge.

There is some real resistance against such change, from those who consider themselves conservative; to fight and stand up to those challenges; by those who not only believe in a liberal view of rights and responsibilities but, those who seek to change how we govern ourselves regarding those issues. So is Barack Obama up to the task of effective leadership of such diverse approaches to life? Time will be the judge! In the meantime, citizens of the United States have a right to great expectations.

Last Thursday, the McCain campaign decided to stop aggressively campaigning in Michigan. This is a mistake, as Sarah Palin at least recognizes. She has expressed a desire to come back to Michigan to continue campaigning. I say to you Senator McCain…Michigan Matters!!! Do not give up on Michigan.

The voter’s in Michigan can make a big difference in this Presidential campaign; every vote counts! Remember the fierce contest between Bush and Gore? Please respect the voters who haven’t made up their minds by understanding that many of them are on the fence; give them a reason to support your team. For those who choose to support Obama-Biden…it gives them an unfair advantage to influence the voters; who may feel abandoned by half of the Presidential nominees.

We are a unique state, in a lot of ways. We are also mavericks. We have overcome alot. Many of us, those who have continued to stay in Michigan despite the economic difficulties, are strong willed. We have been overlooked in the primaries…our votes were cut in half. Do you think that is ok with us? No! Now we are being told that you aren’t thinking that we are worth your time to campaign here; because, some stupid polls are saying that Obama is ahead in numbers? Come on…give us some credit for making our own decisions politically. Polls don’t always transition to winning votes when push comes to shove. Your decision to exclude Michigan from further campaigning is going to carry some serious impact on the outcome of the election. Every votes counts…are you willing to gamble with the votes that you have already gained by ignorning those who haven’t made up their minds?

With your history of heroic action in the military…i didn’t figure you for a quitter. What if your country had given up on you? Your running mate doesn’t appear to give up easily! If you trust her decision making ability, you will reconsider the decision to stop campaigning in Michigan. I say to you…when things look the bleakest…that is when the most amazing things happen; things miraculous!

Take a stand, send Sarah; matter of a fact… come back yourself. Even the runt of a litter that gets picked rewards it’s caretaker with loyalty. This state has a history of turning things around…we’ve done it before…and, we are going to do it again. We have gone through difficulties with businesses closing up and moving out of state or, out of country; we have had the automobile industry take some hard hits…we have struggled to survive. We are going to be on the forefront of the alternative energy field…we are going to turn the economic predictions for Michigan on it’s head.

We don’t forget those that stick by us. Maybe it is time to remind you that Detroit, one of the biggest cities in Michigan, has been RECENTLY scandalized by Detroit’s former mayor, DEMOCRAT Kwame Kilpatrick and his behavior. We want a candidate for President who respects the citizens of this nation and has their best interest at heart. Is that candidate you?

Michigan remembers the bullying tactics that Kilpatrick’s team allegedly used to try to stay in power…Republicans could use that behavior in their favor; as they try to win this state in the Presidential election. Come on, refocus on the voters in Michigan that have been feeling neglected, abused and in-validated over the last year, in the tug of war for votes. It is time to remind the world that Republicans understand that, every vote counts!

There is a grass roots effort to get 100,000 signatures on a petition to bring the McCain-Palin campaign back to michigan here: www.fightformichigan.com Make your voice heard! If you only hear once side of an argument (or campaign) how do you think that will influence the outcome? There is another organization that is going to try to express the opposition to the Obama-Biden campaign message www.ourcountrydeservesbetter.com, by spending up to $500,000 on advertising a Stop Obama campaign. People can’t make informed choices if they are only given one choice…all we ask is give us options in our choosing!

Are you safe and warm; do you have food to eat and clean water to drink where you are? You are blessed. China is in the middle of a mass of miracles and mourning after the earthquake this past week. Families are suffering; and, grieving losses of people and possessions. Many are without a safe place to live. This devastation is large scale and overwhelming to those in need as well as to the aid workers.

Getting clean water, food and shelter to all those who have need is no easy task. Adding the additional strain of flooding from rivers, streams and lakes that have been blocked by debris and backed up water flow; only makes getting aid supplies into remote areas more difficult.

In a country that encourages a family practice of having one birth child, it has a significant impact because, the earthquake has taken the future from many families. Many have honored the Chinese government’s policy to only have one birth child to cut down on the over-population problem. Since this earthquake brought down many schools, hospitals and other institutions that housed children…the impact has devastating, life-long consequences on China’s infrastructure.

Those most vulnerable are the elderly and the young children. The future can be bleak for those who only had one child to care for them in their elder years. If they are past the age of child bearing…this can bring an end to their family line.

In the center of all of this madness, the Olympics are to be held in China in 81 days. The International Olympic Committee has decided to pause the torch relay out of respect for the victims. There will also be three days of national mourning, starting on Monday.

There have been stories of miracles; people who have been buried, under debris and rubble since the quake, who have overcome the circumstances and survived. There will be many such stories as communications improve and time goes on. One man in particular survived 139 hours trapped in rubble from a hospital and came away with minor bruising.

Each miracle brings hope to the hearts of those who have missing loved ones; as experts have said that, a person could survive in these conditions for up to a week as long as they had some access to water and the temperatures were at a survivable level.

Tonight is another episode of Ophrah’s Big Give. This show, if you have not seen it, is all about giving and making a positive change in someone’s life circumstances. To those down on their luck, experiencing loss, lonely, sick or just plain in need; it is a miracle flowing their way. To those doing the giving it is a gift of themselves to be able to tap into their ability to reach out to others and make a difference.

Each week, each contestant is given a certain amount of money…they all have the same rules each week to make the most of giving the money away. Then they are each judged by a panel of three who judge them on their creativity, effectiveness and follow through. If a person is judged to have ill used the money or not followed through or in some way…didn’t exhibit the good intent of the helpfulness then they are let go. Each week…at least one person leaves.

As the responsibilities increase so do the expectations of the panel of judges. In the beginning they worked in teams. They use their talents and knowledge to find ways to raise additional funds in some cases. If they didn’t work well together or tried to go their own way…they were let go. Some were successful and some were not successful at teamwork.

It was and is about using the money to achive the most positive help available and using their skills to tap into communities to support and inspire others to be looking for opportunities to be a blessing to others..

I have to say that this show really challenges the viewer to “pay it forward”. Last week, one of the gentleman failed to follow through. He did some good work…but it was frustrating to see him promise to help pay for a person’s funeral..only to fail to show up because of his commitment to help others and he missed the time frame. That is a heavy load of responsibility and disappointment.

I like that Oprah is doing a show that is an extention of her Christian faith by the idea of “to those who much is given, much is expected in return”. The contestants must find ways to help those in need; and so should we all.

It is a joyful show to watch. It definately springs forward hope to those who have been helped and hopefully will allow them to be able to do the same when they are able for others. The show is a beautiful inspiration for finding the way to live our lives. Keep up the good work!
