Some people have developed avoidance techniques to an art form.  I know that I have on occasion, been known to have done the same thing.  Every time I have fallen victim to putting things off until later (when they absolutely needed to get done) I have found myself under intense pressure.  Of course, it was both internal and external pressure…the internal the pressure that I put on myself simply because i put off whatever “it” was until the last minute…and the external pressure on those occasions where whatever “it” was affected other people who not only expected me to finish “it” they needed me to finish “it”.   Why in heavens name do we do that to ourselves?  I mean, if we are going to do it anyway, why not just do it and get “it” over with?

Once I have followed through and completed whatever “it” was; I felt better.  Which always begs the question, why did I put “it” off in the first place.  Oh, human beings can be complex creatures; no less amusing than a puppy chasing it’s own tail in our attempts to avoid doing something that we really just don’t feel like doing!  Do you know anyone like that?

If you want to overcome this bad habit, it is helpful to make yourself a daily list of thing that you want to accomplish…list some goals.  This is a great way to hold yourself accountable.  In fact, you may even want to pull in an accountability partner that you check in with each day to help keep yourself on task.   Not only will it challenge you to get your goals completed…it may even just encourage your accountability partner to do the same.  It works, I have a great accountability partner…we both get more done because we encourage one another to be productive.  Give it a try!

First and foremost, summer means heat.  After a long winter…nothing sounds better than warmth…but, remember; heat can be deadly.  That means do NOT leave children in cars…for any length of time.  Children can suffer and die in a vehicle that is left in the summer sun in no time at all.  How many terrible stories do we have to learn about before people take this seriously?  No one wants to lose their child to a senseless tragedy.  There are those cases where children “accidently” get left in a car because the parents are transporting their children in a trip that is not routinely scheduled…a different day of day care or some such change of routine.  It happens and it could happen to you if you are not aware of the dangers and the solutions.

Do your family a favor and leave your purse, briefcase or, maybe set a cooking timer next to the young child with the timer set to go off a couple of minutes before you expect to end the trip as a reminder, that your child is in the back seat.

Water is big in the summer time whether it is a pool, lake, stream, creek or river.  Extra care must be given to ensure that your child is safe.  Swimming lessons are a good, traditional way of teaching your children about water safety; but, there are other ways as well.  Talk to your child about how to protect themselves.  Teach them the buddy system.  Teach them how to float.  Teach them to never, ever go near the water without an adult present. 

If you own a pool or live next to a lake or river…install an alarm on your inner door that will chime every time the door opens; or, if you have an adventerous toddler (like I used to) install a chain lock on your door that is positioned high up on the door that will not allow them to open the door far enough to escape the home without notice.   As an added protection, add an alarm that will send out a sound that will alert you when anything enters the water of the pool that changes the water level in the pool such as the amount of water that is displaced when a child enters the water!  It is highly recommended.  Another safety feature is to add one of the new filter covers that help to keep children and adults safe from creating a vacuum that would entrap a person underwater, causing their death.  This is also highly recommended.

Playing outdoors is as natural as breathing.  Running, jumping and playing ball are all part of growing up.  Remind children often to play in safe areas.  Remind them not to chase balls or ride outdoor toys and bikes into traffic areas including driveways that are near sidewalks close to the edge of the roads.  Roller skates/blades, skateboards and small motorized child sized vehicles are dangerous when they are used in areas prone to traffic dangers.

There are just so many hours that seem freer when kids are out of school.  Schedules are looser and sometimes so are boundaries, rules and regulations.  Kids may wander down the street farther than they would normally when they have limited free time.   That puts them at an increased risk for stranger danger.  People gather in larger outdoor groups for things like parades, festivals, outdoor concerts, and street carnivals.  It is easy to be lured into feeling safe when you are on your own turf…close to home.  Dont let that fool you.  Strangers who have criminal intent are free to roam too.  It is a scarier world than it used to be.  Even when kids are at home, inside where parents often think they are safe…they could be at risk.

        You see this all of the time in the world of celebrities…but everyday people often fall into that trap as well.  Beauty, youth, and popularity all pass away in time…what’s left is the spirit, the mind, and their purpose in life.  If those aren’t developed along the way…the search for meaning is sometimes mis-directed onto meaningless relationships, trendy pseudo-religions, drugs/alcohol abuse, and endless dramatic attempts to seek attention. 

         As a society we need to devalue the attention that the media puts on empty pursuits by public role models.  We need to encourage those sports figures, politicians, and celebrities who are doing positive…purposeful things in life.  Quite giving time and attention to those who are living on the edge and doing nothing more with the gifts in their lives than pursuing selfish and destructive behaviors.  In raising our children, we need to develop character building, self esteem, and goals of reaching out to others. 

          We do this by teaching them to discover how to connect to others, give back to those who are less fortunate in life, teach them spiritual fulfillment, and to value their bodies by encouraging modesty and healthy self- esteem building techniques. 

           I dont like seeing young guys or gals flaunting their bodies or their finances to gain attention; I like it even less when i see a 40-60 year old who talks, acts, spends, and dresses like a teenager…because that is the only way they know to attract members of the opposite sex.   Let’s encourage an attitude of growth, respect, confidence, and personal development as a way of life!

         There is never enough money, too many people are depending on us to keep our heads and not risk too much, health problems, demands on our time, a shortage of support, self doubt, low self esteem, fear, fear of failure, lack of hope, a lack of encouragement from others, a need for security, no experience with stepping out on faith, trust issues & even more amazingly, people are afraid of success, wow !; You get the idea…i could fill up this page with reasons why some people not to enable their dreams into become reality.

         So what is the secret that dream achievers have discovered that allowed them to turn a thought, a wish, a dream into reality?  You would have to ask each person what it was that was the turning point; the part where the light bulb came on and they pushed through and turned a corner from underachiever to dream accomplisher. 

          Each person’s answer would probably surprise you.  Each answer would be correct because the very thing that allowed them to move forward and achieve, I suspect is also the very issue that held them back in the first place.   Get it…i think that is the key, facing the issue that is holding you back and discovering how to use it as a tool to overcome and succeed!  Ahhh ha…the light bulb comes on, the key is placed in your hand, you now have the ability to turn it in the lock and walk through the door to success.

           But a successful dream has a price, for each successful dream there is a cost…a sacrifice.  Nothing that is worth anything of real lasting  value comes without a personal sacrifice.  When we sacrifice to accomplish the things that mean the most to us…we are showing our dedication, our commitment to it, we are acknowledging how valuable the goal is by how much we sacrifice.  Is it scary?  You bet.  Does it work?  Sometimes…but it is important to note that you have to have 100% commitment to achieving your goal…no wishy washy half hearted attempt will get you where you want to be.   Is your sacrifice worth the price?  Only you know the answer to that.  Know what you are giving up to achieve your dream and understand the consequences; and, be ready to accept them as the cost…otherwise…you might achieve your dream and loose something equally important or more imporant, to you than the dream!!!!  Communicate with your loved ones and make sure that your goals are in alignment with your most important relationships…that you have their support!  How much more powerful will your accomplishments be, when those you cherish most are backing you up?

          So what have you sacrificed to achieve your dream?  Are you satisfied?  Did you trade up your sacrifice, for your dream…or, did you make an error in judgement; and, cost yourself your dream and your sacrifice?  It is important to have your priorities in place to have your dream, and be happy with the purchase price.   Tell us what have you sacrificed to achieve your dream!!!
